I love hand embroidery. I’ve taught myself, by picking a pattern and googling each stitch, but if you prefer a more organized way to learn how to hand embroidery from home, I’ve put together a list of online embroidery classes for beginners!
I compiled this list from designers and sites I know and trust, covering several different styles and projects. I feel like there is a hand embroidery project for everyone to get excited about in this list, and there are several free classes if you’re on a budget.

If you’ve wondered how to learn hand embroidery at home, I have a whole list of options! There are lots of online embroidery classes for beginners to choose from, and I’m sharing some of my favorites from designers I know and trust.
I’ve stitched one of Jessica’s patterns, you can see the constellation embroidery project here, and she has a fun embroidery class on Craftsy that covers a ton of different stitches, stitching on knit fabric, and designing your own pattern with video lessons.
I love the patterns Jessica shares in her Namaste Embroidery shop, and her class looks like a lot of fun! It has two patterns included, that wreath and a cute bear and then talks about making patches from your embroidery, all with video lessons.
This looks like a fantastic first introduction to hand embroidery, covering the most basic from hooping your fabric up through finishing it off, and everything in between, taught on Craftsy and with video lessons.
This online hand embroidery class from Annie’s has a ton of projects included, in addition to video lessons covering tools, hooping, transferring designs, 16 different stitches, and several class projects.
A hand embroidery video course taught on Skillshare, this is freehand instead of following a pattern and covers how to start and finish a hoop, choosing materials, color theory, and 7 stitches.
Another Skillshare class, this is a video course on how to hand embroider a monogram, covering lots of solid basic skills along with the free monogram pattern.
Free online hand embroidery courses
Wendi at Shiny Happy World has a free embroidery 101 online class, that covers tools, choosing a pattern, knots, four basic stitches, and how to frame your finished work. There are video lessons for the stitches.
A free online embroidery class on Instructables, it covers two different sampler patterns are included, teaching you 11 different stitches, in addition to more embroidery basics like pattern transfer, finishing a hoop, and tools. There are videos for the stitches.

Allison at Sweater Doll has a free embroidery series of 11 lessons, all linked and located on her blog. She covers tools, transferring the design, using knots, 12 different beginner stitches, washing & caring for your embroidery, and more.
