We’ve collated nine delectable new designs from this year’s Stockholm Furniture Fair to put straight on your want list.

With Stockholm Design Week and Furniture Fair wrapping up for another year, we were excited to share the prized products on offer. As anticipated, Stockholm Design Week and Stockholm Furniture Fair have raised the bar globally with their unbinding calibre and quality in 2019. This year’s exhibitors continued to challenge the confines of how Scandinavian design and innovation typically appears, while championing natural materials and unrivalled craftsmanship. Great Dane founder Anton Assaad said in 2019 he felt a presence of nature more than any year before, reflected in colour highlights from the fair that included muted and forest greens, plum and sand. So too did chrome resurface as a finish of choice.

While a tricky task at hand, we’ve selected nine design collectables that snatched our attention at Stockholm in 2019.

Novel Chair

The Novel Chair by Danish designer Ida Linea Hildebrand for Friends & Founders debuted at this year’s fair and it wasn’t long before it was met with some serious praise. The elegant geometry – rectangular meets c-shape – represents confident and contemporary design, while the contrasting monochrome emphasises these lines. The Novel Chair is set to be available from the end of the year and we’re sure its set for design icon status.

The Spanish Dining Chair

As one of the biggest influencers of Danish modern design, Børge Mogensen’s work is instantly recognisable, so we were excited to see a revival of another one of his designs. It may be made from the same oak and buttery saddle leather, but the Spanish Dining Chair is not a reinterpretation of the Spanish Chair, rather has just recently entered production again after a 15 year hiatus. Better yet, these timeless dining room pieces are soon to be gracing the floors of Great Dane.

String Outdoor

It’s as if String were thinking of their friends down under when extending their range outdoors. Fitting to the Australian indoor-outdoor experience, the new String Outdoor range will be available in moisture and rust-resistant galvanised metal, with classic String panels and shelves by designers Anna von Schewen and Björn Dahlström. String also celebrated their 70th birthday at this year’s event, and are still proudly producing all of their products in southern Sweden. We can thank Great Dane for the impending arrival of Outdoor String locally.

Plate Lamp

Sage and forest green were the clear colour thread at Stockholm Furniture Fair in 2019 and thoroughly embraced by Ukrainian design studio FILD in their stand design. FILD founders Dan and Kateryna Vakhrameyevs chose forest green as their Winter 2019 colour to tie in with their admiration for Scandinavian nature, design and lifestyle. The Plate Lamp is a striking capture of this deep green, melding together the beauty of texture, colour and form.

FF Chair

Designers behind Friends & Founders Rasmus and Ida Linea Hildebrand definitely hit the ground running at this year’s fair, also introducing their FF Chair for the dining room. Nodding to the return and rise of chrome, the FF Chair joins their portfolio of personality plus objects and just like the Novel Chair, projects an air of opulence. To get your hands on this collectable, head to Fred International.

Bastone Cabinet

We know we aren’t alone in highlighting the Bastone Cabinet as a standout from Stockholm in 2019, presented by Finnish Design Studio Poiat. Poiat collaborated with master cabinet maker and young designer of the year in 2018 Antrei Hartikainen to launch the Bastone Collection at this year’s exhibit. The exceptional piece made from solid oak takes its name from the Finnish word for ‘stick’; a cabinet that (can you believe) also comes flat packed.

Convex Light

Tapping into the fair’s theme of chrome and galvanised metal was the team at Zero Lighting, in their Convex Pole Light, part of the Coastline range. This outdoor light was designed by Jens Fagner, under the core philosophy that ‘everything is and will be different’. The entire Coastline series is a tasteful industrial compilation, showcased by Zero Lighting and locally distributed by Great Dane.

Nine Notable Designs From Stockholm Furniture Fair 2019

Avavick Stool

Leave it to the Swedes to push functionality to the front. Designed for Sweden’s National Museum, Katja Peterson revealed the Avavick Stool at Stockholm this year as part of the Swedese stand; a petite, bent wood stackable stool.

Focus Podseat

Note Design Studio introduced the latest member of the Focus family, the Focus Podseat, to Stockholm Furniture Fair crowd this year. The Focus Podseat is an elongated seating unit with a high backrest, providing intimacy and a sound absorbing effect. Combining screen, bench and work table, we’ll certainly be considering this one for the office…
