This Mykonos home represents the very best of Aegean aesthetic with its whitewashed walls, open air spaces, and liberal usage of earthy materials. Unmistakably Cycladic in architecture and fitted out to suit the most luxurious of tastes, it blends in perfectly with the rest of the buildings in this island playground of the rich and famous. Though the project only has renders at this point in time, when they’re this alluring, who needs the real thing anyway?
Designed by Block722architects+, the firm brings a cross-cultural approach to their work (as seen in previous projects like their ) that is influenced by the cities of Athens and Stockholm, where their two offices are located. While the combination of these two cultures might seem unlikely in its pairing, we can’t help but feel the pairing is what lends the studio’s work its signature aesthetic – keenly manifested in the clean lines, angular stone-cut shelving and benches, and of course the healthy fixation of neutrals in the residence.
DESIGN
Spanning 300 m2, the property is intimate in size but by using interesting elements like a thatched ceiling and tall windows (up to five in some rooms) that stretch nearly the entire height of the wall, it gives the impression of a much larger space that utilises natural light and ventilation to the fullest. Stone and timber are the two main materials used in the home, which not only brings the Scandi influence in the project to the fore but also serves the functional purpose of naturally cooling the space in the hot months. Stone platforms rising a few inches above the ground are also a prominent feature in the living areas, used mainly for day beds. Outside, the teal-tiled swimming pool and adjoining stone decking combine to create an inviting communal area, complete with a shaded area for dining and food preparation.
Intended to maximise comfort by creating ample lounging spaces for its residents and their guests alike, this Mykonos home is bound to get plenty of action in balmy summer days.
Small details – like timber casing for the windows and finely latticed timber cabinetry – come together beautifully in this Mykonos home to create a sense of harmony with the rest of the natural materials.
