It’s not everyday you see a barn seamlessly added to the back of a house AND look like it’s been there for decades. Well, the talented team at has pulled off just this and the clients couldn’t be more thrilled with the outcome. Located in the charming Melbourne suburb of Mt Martha, this is not your typical weathered summer holiday home. Instead the space is filled with light-filled, open spaces, making the best of both the interior design and the surrounding greenery.

Home to a family with three young boys, a design that worked both practically and spatially was a must. As the family love to spend their time together, they also wanted the spaces to seamlessly flow from one to another. In response, rather than just completing a “regular” extension, the Sisalla team and builder took inspiration from classic English Tudor style, adding a new barn-style living room. Although the living room is an extension of the home, the same fresh ambience of the existing home is carried through. The pitched roof and collective windows allow for ample amounts of natural light to flood in, creating the perfect haven and place for the family to retreat to after a busy days work.
As the hub of the home, the kitchen layout was reworked to create more of a flow with the mud room/laundry and to link in with the new living area. Positioned just a step up from the living room means the parents can keep an eye on their children playing, while preparing meals at the same time – the best of both worlds for keeping little ones occupied without needing to have them under your feet in the thoroughfare of the kitchen and dining space. Handmade subway tiles create a textured and charming feel, while the darker coloured grout and warm wooden elements speak to a more modern palette.
Overall, the home has a tangible feeling of warmth and welcome. The combination of soothing natural materials, such as the varying layers of timber, stone feature wall and textured tiles allow the interior to be a homely and timeless place of refreshment for this happy family of five. With the help from some creative thinkers at Sisalla, this once average home has been transformed into a humble abode that is as practical as it is stunning.
