Nestled among the stretching rows of whitewashed houses that cling to the Aegean sea clifftops, you could be forgiven for overlooking this outwardly indistinguishable 19th century home. One glance inside however, and you’ll see that this island retreat has been given a new lease on life by native design practice K-Studio. All wrapped up in a soft, zen-like ambience, Plaka on the Greek island of Milos is a world away from the hustle of London (where its owners reside) making Milos House the perfect summer family getaway.

K-studio is part of the new wave of architectural talent emerging out of Greece. Brothers Dimitris and Konstantinos Karampatakis are carving a new path with their innovative ideas and resourcefulness. The Karampatakis brothers founded K-studio in 2004 with the aim of paying homage to the skill and craft of traditional Greek architecture, all the while ensuring their projects remain contemporary for a new generation.

Built in 1813, Milos House is a solid stone dwelling that has undergone a modern restoration process. Embracing the location’s naturally rocky terrain, ample sunlight and enviable sea views, K-studio have restored continuity across both floors of the home. Daily living takes place in the lofty, light-filled upper level that has been adjusted to accommodate modern family life.

Originally used as a storage and utility space, the basement (quite literally carved into the mountain rock) has been restored to a cosy private guest suite. Throughout the interior, traditional and modern features work in harmony together – particularly in the kitchen, where state-of-the-art cooking appliances and the latest technology appear alongside the rustic décor and custom handcrafted furniture.

Inside the home simple, raw finishes provide cooling respite and allow the house to breathe, while the original timber beams and unpainted walls give the interiors a relaxed feel.

Neutral tones and organic shapes throughout the house create a quiet sense of order. Instead of being filled with objects and art, there’s a minimally curated selection of handcrafted furniture, lighting and traditional objects that highlight the local craftsmanship and celebrate a quintessentially Greek artisanal style. Warm accents of earthy terracotta, crumpled linens and cool blues break the tonal palette but keep things low key. Slate stones, timber flooring and roughly finished walls reinforce the interior’s rustic and textural charm, while the addition of technology and modern fixtures bring it comfortably into the 21st century.

Like most of K-Studio’s Greek projects, they are sure to infuse their fierce sense of pride surrounding the heritage of Mediterranean craftsmanship. Milos House is part of a new generation of homes that take elements of Greece and rearrange them into a more contemporary context. It’s a home away from home that embodies the purity and minimalism that Greece is so well known and so well loved for.
