GIANT PAPER SNOWFLAKES
An antique pine table with late-eighteenth-to-early-nineteenth-century Swedish dining chairs from Maison Artefact, has been decorated with white cardboard cut-out snowflakes from John Lewis, tealight holders from Cox & cox, silver footed bowls from Petersham Nurseries and Victorian enameled letters from Lassco acting as place cards.
Down the stairs a bespoke garland of eucalyptus, holly, snowberry and conifer from Interflora is twined with fairy lights.

SPRIG STARS
Foliage sprigs have a certain natural symmetry, so snipping a few sprigs and branches up and arranging them as star shapes will look Christmassy.
Here is a mix of fir, rosemary, holly and various shrubs – for visual richness. A stem of rosemary can be bent into a circle and tied together to create a quick and pretty place-card holder.

BEAUTIFUL BOUGHS
For a magical sense of occasion, attach a bough of any relatively straight, narrow tree – we used birch – to each side of the back of a chair. Attach with wire or cable ties and cover with a decorative ribbon, or go wild with a pretty coloured twine. As long as the branch touches the floor, it won’t tip the chair over. The position of this arrangement means that views across the table are uninterrupted, and a cosy under-the-arbour atmosphere prevails. We’ve hung the branches with bells and baubles for Christmas, but you could add white ribbons for weddings or sweets for birthdays.
