Designed by Melbourne’s multi-disciplinary big leagues Hecker Guthrie, Many Little bistro and bar on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula present us with yet another reason to visit Red Hill.

Leafy and picturesque, Red Hill on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula has solidified itself as an epicurean destination with the addition of all-day-eatery Many Little by Polperro. Designed by none other than Melbourne contemporary heavyweights; Hecker Guthrie. The hugely successful duo behind est’s recently featured Piccolina Gelateria and South Yarra Home comes the casual concept behind Many Little bar and bistro. Formed off the back of its successful sister restaurant and run by the same family, Polperro is located just a stone’s throw up the road and an alumni of the Hecker Guthrie treatment.

From your first coffee and croissant of the day to your last meal and cocktail in the evening, Many Little draws on inspiration from its rural setting with a strong emphasis on introducing a refined element to every detail. The seasonal and locally derived menu has been constructed with nourishment and comfort front of mind and the interior décor follows suit.

From where it sits, the views overlooking the adjoining vineyard frame muted green landscapes which inform the interior material palette. Built entirely on a foundation of earthy, natural tones and varying textures, elements such as the ash-grey half-cut bricks, terrazzo, rich timber panelling and accents of terracotta draw in the outside beauty. The neutral palette creates a calm and flexible backdrop to additions including arrangements of fresh local foliage, forest green leather-bound menus, speckled ceramic plates, sculptural pieces by Melbourne creative Bruce Rowe of Anchor Ceramics and artwork by Australian artist Alice Blanch.

“Objects and furniture were placed within the restaurant, to create a varying landscape of enclosures, incorporating a sense of the artisan or craft in the detailing of each element – a handmade quality.” Explains the team at Hecker Guthrie and to this point, we think the forever timeless Scandinavian CH88 dining chairs by Hans J. Wegner from Cult are an elegant finishing touch.

Able to seat up to 90 but also featuring pockets of intimate spaces, Many Little is made up of a number of flexible spaces determined by the change in flooring and the perforated black metal shelving, which signifies where one zone starts and another stops. Brick flooring in the entrance and bar sets the tone at the front. Up the steps and into the dining area it merges into timber flooring which takes you all the way to the very back and into the private dining room, which can be closed off by bi-fold doors. At the rear outside, a pebbled herb garden sits out in secluded courtyard.

Making space for every occasion and meal of the day, Many Little makes a fine addition to a lineage of iconic spots within Red Hill with every detail an ode to the surrounding beauty of its unique rural Victorian location.
