We’ve long admired the style and sensibility of Finnish interior architect and designer . In her previous work for venues such as and , Joanna deftly balances the function and aesthetic of a space while imbuing a sense of her own assured style.
Recently Joanna has turned her eye to homes with this residential project for a home in the city of Lahti, Finland. Choosing refined materials and modest, elegant furnishings, the resulting design is a discerning home for the modern Nordic audience.
Joanna’s philosophy is “to not clutter this world with unnecessary things” (something we couldn’t agree with more) and she certainly achieves that through her design practice. Working with a neutral colour palette and favouring natural materials such as oak and stone, the interior architecture highlights the simple beauty of the apartment, complemented with carefully selected furniture additions throughout. Open plan living, dining and kitchen areas give that much-needed apartment commodity of space, while extensive storage has been cleverly built into the entrance hall to minimise odds and ends scattered throughout the home.
Classic features such as the ornate doors and windows, skirting boards and architraves have been preserved with a fresh white layer of paint, while the jet black kitchen has standout style amongst the timber, cream and deep crimson hues of the home. The darker features also emerge in the bathroom, where slate fish scale ceramic tiles juxtapose nicely with the white brick walls and shelving.
As would be expected from the home features a collection of interesting vintage and design lighting choices, as well as a refined collection of art and indoor greenery. This is a home with plenty of personality, delivered in a discerning and elegant manner.
Painting it Black: Matte black cabinetry, stone counter and splash back together with the tapware contrast beautifully against the warm timber boards and greenery on display in the kitchen.
A surprising but very welcome inclusion to the home! This traditional Finnish sauna is just the thing to soothe sore limbs and tired bodies.
