This summer was a veritable paradise for dress lovers, with high-street and designer brands alike knocking it out the park with all manner of statement-making styles. So, as winter draws in, we have to admit that we’re not quite ready to let go of our newfound obsession. Yes, we might be in denial, but as the weather has never stopped us dressing how we want before, we decided to do our research and discover how the fashion crowd are making their summer dresses survive the drop in temperature.

Alongside the obvious roll-neck layering technique (see Emma Thatcher’s clever transformation of the It Topshop dress), there are plenty of chic ways to make the dress-layering hack work. Whether you want to re-use August’s tea dresses over jeans and with jackets, try out an evening look with a silky tunic over equally slinky palazzos or add a strong blouse to a spaghetti-strapped midi, we have ideas.

December wardrobe, sorted. Scroll down to see our favourite looks, and then shop the best layering dresses.

Style Notes: Jessie Bush is doing the trick we’re all taking to work this week—a white roll-neck under a checked dress.
Style Notes: Get some extra wear out of summer’s strappiest dresses by layering with a blouse, like Maria.
Style Notes: Ada is the queen of layering, and this tea dress and indigo jeans formula has us intrigued.
Style Notes: Stephanie adds to the patchwork Ganni dress with a tee, trench, thick socks and hiking boots. Sounds crazy on paper, really works IRL.
Style Notes: Proof that Topshop’s It dress isn’t just for the summer months. It looks like it was made to be worn over a black roll-neck sweater.
Style Notes: Erica isn’t the only woman we’ve seen layering a sleeveless dress with an animal print top—there’s something very positive to take away here.
Style Notes: Trust Carrie Bradshaw-alike Emili to take this idea to the next level, and with an eveningwear slant.
Style Notes: Hajra’s snake dress has a plunging neckline that’s calling out to be styled up with a black roll-neck.
