The absolute first design I thought of while I was developing Hue + Me was the Trio Toboggan. I adore fair isle pompom beanies, and with 18 coordinating colors with combos that can’t go wrong, it’s the perfect application!

This ski style hat will forever remind me of Kevin McCallister in Home Alone. I even named an older pattern after him (the McCallister Fair Isle Toque worked up in Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick). I love the classic, schoolboy feel and the playful nature of this style! I also have several other toboggan patterns designed with the currently discontinued Woolspun such as the ever-popular Adirondack Toboggan.

My favorite part about this pattern is the fact that you can make 3 hats from only 3 skeins to create a little trio for your friends and fam. it’s the knitwear version of best friend necklaces!

It took some engineering and A LOT of weighing to make sure the proportions of each color would work out so that you could get three adult hats out of the 3 skeins and that I didn’t use too much of any one color. I am so thrilled with the result and I know I’ll be wearing this hat throughout the winter.

You really can’t go wrong with any color combo in Hue + Me, so this could easily be worked up in any of them and look spectacular. It’s the perfect canvas to playfully show off your favorite shades or match them to school colors or any other inspo you can think of. Can’t decide on a combo? Notes: Hat is worked from the bottom up on circular needles and then finished on double pointed needles for the crown shaping. Opposite color is stranded behind work on rounds with more than one color. Keep floats very loose to ensure hat can still stretch. Pattern is written for three sizes: child (adult small, adult large). Up to three adult large hats can be made with one skein of each color if alternating colors. Designate a color A, B, and C before beginning.

Pompom:

With color A, use pompom maker to make pompom, wrapping yarn approx. 90 times around. Pompom should weigh approx. 0.5oz/14g to ensure three hats can be made from three alternating colors.
