How to Wear Last Year’s Gingham Pieces Now That Summer’s Here

Last summer, gingham captured everyone’s hearts, as you couldn’t go on Instagram without seeing the tablecloth-check print. Checked off-the-shoulder tops, cropped trousers and strappy tops became the unofficial Instagram uniform. And one year later, the print remains just as popular.

Of course, gingham isn’t new, as the print loved by Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz has actually been around for centuries. It’s thought to have originated in Southeast Asia and was later seen in the 18th century in mills in Manchester. It’s no longer just a twee preppy print associated with school girl pinafores. It can fit into any wardrobe.

To give you some inspiration for how to wear the gingham pieces you bought last year in a 2019 way, we rounded up our favourite blogger outfits. And if you still have a gingham hole in your wardrobe, we’ve found the best new pieces to fill it. When you click through the gallery below, it’ll become clear why gingham is the trend that just keeps going—and we’ve got style tips for all of them.

Style Notes: We’re always inspired by Lucy Williams and in particular her holiday looks. Green plus green equals the dream beach combo. Add statement accessories to complete the look.

Lucy’s exact skirt is available from Adenora’s label Musier Paris. We’ll take notes from both of these lady’s wardrobes.

Style Notes: Yellow and red are a key colour combo this season – Lotte has nailed the look with a right clashing lip.

You’ll wear this with everything from jeans and a tee to slip dresses.

Style Notes: Ada Uguntodu styles her mono midi with a slogan T-shirt and layered crop top. Matching black and white accessories complete the chic vibe.

Try teaming it with a puffy sleeve top and espadrilles.

Style Notes: Matching but clashing prints are the way forward. Wear a scarf as a headband like Maria or opt for an easy to throw-on knotted headband.

Headbands are so very 2019—and beyond.

Style Notes: Bright suits are key this year, as is gingham. Team the two together and you get the perfect summery package just like Trine.

You’ll also want to wear it with jeans and trainers, too.

Style Notes: Make like Monikh and go for a zesty gingham bikini top with matching cover-up. It goes so well with raffia accessories and golden jewels.

Add a slip skirt over for the top to head to the poolside bar.

Style Notes: Update your classic cropped jacket to a bright gingham version. Clash with colour block trousers for extra style points. Thanks for the inspo, Karoline!

It will also look great over a slip dress and strappy sandals.
