How to Lay Stepping Stones in Your Garden

A patio of Indian sandstone paving stones makes for a lovely space in any garden, but so to the rustic touch of neatly laid, strategically placed paving stones. This is also a smart way of making sure that people don’t ruin the grass or get their shoes all dirty when walking back and forward.

Laying a series of stepping stones is a relatively easy DIY job that anyone can carry out simply by following these steps.

Work Out How Many Stepping Stones Are Needed

The first step is to measure the area and calculate how many paving stone slabs the path will be made up of. You will want them to be close enough to be comfortable to walk on without stretching but far enough apart to look like attractive stepping stones.

It then helps to lay out the slabs on top of the grass before go any further. In this way you can also create a pleasing design that goes exactly where you want it to go. You should then leave each slab in place on top of the turf while you work on them in turn.

Prepare the Holes

A hole needs to be cut into the grass where each slab is going to rest. These holes should be the same width and length as the slabs you are going to be using, but deeper. This means that they won’t stick up over the grass and potentially cause people to trip or your lawnmower’s blades to get damaged.

Ideally, you will dig out an extra inch or so deeper than the size of the stepping stone. You can then add half an inch of sand and compact it well for a solid base.

Fix the Slabs into Place

The next step is to add a mixture of cement and sand into each hole. You should add enough of this mixture so that your stone paving slabs sit slightly below the level of the surrounding grass, which might involve a bit of trial and error for the first couple of stones.

Then you can press the slabs down firmly into position. To be fair, they are typically heavy enough to settle down nicely into position without too much outside help.

Optional Extras

A very nice path design can be created by digging out the grass surrounding the slabs and filling it in with garden gravel instead. Some people also add small shrubs between the slabs or put taller plants along the sides to give it a secluded, secret path feel. You should just look to spend some time thinking about how you can make this a really special part of your garden. If you do this then it will soon be a pleasure to step from stone to stone and admire the wonderful job that you have done.
