How To Grow Carambola or starfruit in a pot or in your garden
Carambola is a star-shaped fruit that you’ve probably seen a few times at your local grocery store. Native to Asia, this juicy, yellow fruit can range from super tart to super sweet, depending on when you eat them. This super unique fruit is a kid’s favorite, but the tree will also look super impressive in your garden. Starfruit usually only grows in warm areas, mostly USDA zones 9-11, but you can still try to grow a starfruit tree at home as long as you give it plenty of sunlight. HOW TO GROW CARAMBOLA
We recommend that you buy a star fruit tree from your local nursery or online, as growing from seed can be a bit difficult, but not impossible.
Sow starfruit:
- Choose a spot with full to partial sun where you can plant your starfruit tree.
- Make sure your tree will be at least 25-30 feet slow around it.
- Dig a hole that is flatter than the root but twice as wide as the root.
- Separate the roots of your starfruit tree, and gently place them in the hole.
- Make sure the star fruit tree is vertical.
- As you fill the hole, add water to remove any air in the soil.
- Remove any weeds or stones that may be around your tree.
Careful tips:
- The tree will grow around 25-30 feet tall, and the same long.
- Make sure to prune your tree occasionally.
- Water regularly. Make sure it is in full sun.
HARVEST THE CARAMBOLA FRUIT:
Your tree should start to produce fruit in 2-3 years. You will know when they are ripe once they are yellow, but they can also be picked green if you like it more like a sour fruit.
