Hi Friends! This is Kristin from , back with another custom Mood Board just for the Remodelaholic readers! You know how some girls plan out their future wedding ahead of time, making a “secret” Pinterest board or flipping through bridal magazines when they think no one is looking? Well, this interior designer has been planning her family cottage for years-saving pages torn from magazines and pin-pinning away for the “someday”. And that day has finally come! We bought a tiny little lake house to create memories for our family of five. But this little 1940s cottage has some tight spaces, so we have to get creative with space and budget (sound familiar to anyone?!) So we are going to create a shared bedroom for our three kids to share, ages 5, 7, and 9.
Some of you might have kids that need to share a room, or have a small child who will soon move in with big brother or sister. Or maybe you just want a guest bedroom that can accommodate an extra bed for friends or guests. (Or just use these ideas for a single child’s bedroom-you only have to buy half the pieces!) Today I’m here to share some ways to create a GENDER NEUTRAL and practically ageless bedroom for kids to share. And as always, they are going to be do-able, beautiful, and budget friendly. Woohoo! Here’s a peek at what I created for you today:
But before we jump into the Mood Board, I wanted to share some gorgeous eye candy that can inspire you to make a bedroom your children actually WANT to share! For even more inspiration, I have a solely dedicated to , so get a jump start over there!

If you have the extra space, I love how they fit in full sized beds for a little extra sleeping space:
I don’t know which is more dreamy-this wallpaper or those matching Jenny Lind beds. If you are tight on space, use a shared dresser instead of two smaller end tables! Benches at the end of the bed can give an extra landing space.
If you want to create a bunk room to sleep a crowd, this room is perfection! Great for a family cottage, grandparent’s house, or if you just have a lot of kiddos! Bunk beds are a great way to free up extra floor space.
A sweet way to personalize a bunkbed: each bed has different bedding that still coordinates. This is great when boys and girls are sharing a room, or just letting kids express themselves. They kept it cohesive with all white bedding and accents with pillows and a throw blanket. This rope ladder is an easy DIY project that looks like a million bucks!
And now for today’s Mood Board-created just with you guys in mind! Because I have our lake cottage in the back of MY mind, I went for a cottage-style theme, but what I love about it is these colors are both classic AND gender neutral. If you have a boy and girl sharing a space, maybe add some girly charm to her bed by adding in a fun throw pillow, or a hint of turquoise. You can further create an individual feel by monogramming their throw pillows, or let each child choose the artwork that will go over his or her bed.

I used this beautiful shared bedroom from as a starting off point for inspiration (see Mood Board above)! The all white space makes a perfect background for these vintage-style, yet still modern pieces. Try shiplap, board and batten, or just paint the walls white (#7) as a neutral base. These beautiful headboards (#1) are a steal at just over $100 each and gives each kiddo a comfy place to read. Cut down on fighting over when it’s lights out by giving each child a sconce (#2) (or use a bedside lamp or plug-in sconce if you don’t want the extra electrical work).
Then layer up the bedding with classic, age-proof patterns such as this seersucker duvet (#3), neutral star sheets (#5), and a pop of color with these swiss cross pillows (#10). For extra warmth and another layer of pattern, try adding a simple throw to the bottom of the bed (#8).
You literally can’t go wrong with stripes (my husband might say I have a major stripes addiction!), but this navy and white striped rug adds a soft place to play AND helps ground the space (#6). A rug is a great way to pull in the different colors or patterns of a room to make it feel cohesive. With multiple kids sharing a space, storage can be a premium. If closet space is small, add extra storage with a trunk at the bottom of each bed (#9).
Add some fun personality to the space with these fun pennants (#4) for above each bed. Let your kids pick out their favorite teams or slogans (or sub in some cool artwork instead). And the final focal point of the room is this nautical inspired oversized pendant light fixture (#11).
