A young Melbourne couple expecting their first child thought their home required an extension to accommodate the needs of their expanding family. Through the ‘Design Diagnosis’ process, Sally Holbrook from NORTHBOURNE Architecture + Design discovered an extension was not necessary for her clients to achieve their ideal living environment.
It is most unusual for an architect to talk their client out of extending their home – they’d be doing themselves out of a job, wouldn’t they? But when a home presents excellent bones and ample existing floor area, why encourage clients to waste time, money and stress extending, when all that is needed to achieve an outcome of ideal functionality with an exciting and appropriate aesthetic, is a clever internal redesign of the existing building footprint.
NORTHBOURNE re-planned the existing building into a series of spaces and storage solutions that suited the specific needs of the clients’ new expanding family, whilst minimising the environmental impact. NORTHBOURNE were able to fulfil the clients’ brief for a luxurious master suite with a walk-in robe and ensuite, functional storage in the bedrooms, a grand main bathroom & functional laundry. An intimate lounge room was also created by introducing a functional fireplace and wood storage. The entire home was then modernised by introducing a new timber floor throughout, giving the home a contemporary and holistic feel.
Not only did this strategy save the clients time and money, the outcome was exactly what they required for a cohesive family lifestyle – the clients could not be happier!
