Once a prominent Belle Epoque institution packed with artists, writers and socialites,  Hotel Bachamont had faded from its former glory to a nondescript Parisian clinic. Enter now-owner Sammy Marciano and designer Dorothée Meilichzon, who recognised the building’s potential and have since restored it for a new age, elegantly combining Art Deco and minimalist features to reflect the aesthetic of 21st century Paris.

Located in a tree-lined street of Montorgueil, a stone’s throw away from the Louvre and the historic buildings of Le Marais, the hotel’s Hausmannian façade and stone-engraved lettering of its name is Parisian sophistication at its best. Guests enter through a glazed corridor, walking on marble flooring with geometric shapes in black and white. Inside, the hotel’s 49 rooms are furnished using a palette of deep blues, teals and greys; large beds with Pierre Frey fabric headboards, marble-and-wood writing desks and Stilnovo brass lamps are a standard feature. Generous in size, the suites are awash with natural light and come equipped with modern-day markers of luxury like a claw-foot bathtub and a Nespresso machine.

The hotel’s restaurant and bar are operated by Romée de Goriainoff, Pierre-Charles Cros, and Olivier Bon of Experimental Group. The trio is known for their high-end hospitality and after a meal of Galician Wagyu côte de boeuf served by attentive staff under a glass roof on a starry night, it is easy to see why. Though the food is superb, their cocktails are the real showstoppers – try the flower-infused Vol de Nuit, a vodka and champagne cocktail that won’t disappoint. Bevelled mirrors and fabric chairs in playful prints in the restaurant build on the roaring twenties’ vibe but the handsome detailing of dark wood and black marble at the bar adds a subtle balance.

Outside, Hotel Bachaumont is in good company. Tingle your olfactory senses at Nose, an artisanal perfumery, or tuck into a baba au rhum (rum cake) from Patisserie Stohrer, the oldest pastry shop in Paris. They say that the best way to explore a city is to get lost in it and Paris presents the best of opportunities; besides, you can’t go too far wrong with Notre Dame, Louvre and Sacré-Coeur situated a 20 to 40 minute stroll away.

For the traveller that wants an authentic Parisian experience, quietude in the heart of the city, and luxury without the ostentation, Hotel Bachaumont is a worthy choice that will live up to your expectations. And if this is your umpteenth time to Paris, staying in all day in the comfort of your room is perfectly acceptable too.
