winter home designThe Entryway

From the moment you step inside, light-wood furnishings with mid-century notes and a mix of natural materials and woven textures abound. These elements set the stage for the modern-rustic tone and sense of ease throughout the home.

rustic entrywayThe Key Entryway Elements:

Patterned woven textures. What makes baskets and natural-fiber rugs appear extra cozy are designs with patterns. Think geometrics and stripes, which lend a warm, visual element.

Sculptural natural woods. Your foyer is the perfect showcase for wood pieces that have organic silhouettes. More than in any space, they’ll add focus and leave a strong impression in your entryway.

Artisanal modern-rustic touches. From big pieces, like a spindle bench, to carved wood trays and homespun ceramics, these handmade elements are details that instantly cozy up any entry.

winter home design The Living Room

Cozy and serene, the living room evokes the look and feel of an elegant farmhouse with a spa-like vibe. The palette is comprised of soft neutrals, the textures are breezy and sumptuous, and curated furnishings keep the space feeling light and airy. Talk about the perfect winter decor escape.

The Key Living Room Elements:

Solid hues with subtle lines. For a calming space that hits the perfect modern-rustic note, opt for furnishings like slipcovered sofas and clean-lined leather chairs, in quiet solid hues. These make for the perfect mix of comfort and bold that also looks serene and sophisticated.

Light upholstery, big textures. Solid upholstery in light colors doesn’t necessarily mean basic textures. Go for durable linen and luxe leather as well as chunky natural fibers. They compliment the soothing lines of the furniture by introducing a comfy and cozy touch.

White on off-whites. There are white-on-white moments elsewhere, but in the living room, it’s all about varying the crisp tone with off-whites and beiges. Why? It plays beautifully with the leather, fabric upholstery, natural fibers, and rustic fireplace and shiplap walls.

cozy winter reading nookThe Reading Nook

No winter home design is complete without a cozy nook (or two or three). And our home is no exception, although instead of lots of furnishings, we took a pared-down approach. A crisp slipcover armchair ready with a warm throw and raw wood accents lend a sense of Scandinavian calm and ease.

The Key Nook Elements:

Classic curvy chair. Rather than a rectangular armchair, pick a piece that hugs the body all around and makes for an easy place to curl up. Add a throw and you’re good to go for the winter months ahead.

Raw wood elements. With just the right amount in a small nook, raw wood accents and finishing touches can provide warm rustic appeal as well as a soothing, toned-down vibe.

Fine-line art and details. Instead of graphic art, elegant line drawings and prints make for a softer, more neutral alternative. They lend intrigue without overwhelming a small rustic space.

When it comes to a warm wintry gathering spot, tap into the Danish sentiment of Hygge, which celebrates all things simple, beautiful, and cozy. Scandinavian-inspired dining furniture along with pretty woven accents and ceramics in organic shapes will usher in the quiet ethos perfectly.

The Key Dining Room Elements:

Streamlined Scandi designs. Chic Danish Modern pieces and designs with Scandinavian influences will drive the Hygge aesthetic home. It’s all about keeping it curated and opting for fewer pieces that are simple and beautiful.

Minimal accents. Truly embrace the less is more aesthetic. It’s about pulling back on accessories and bringing in only pieces that inspire a feeling of joy, comfort, and coziness.

Textural focal points. Whether it’s a woven light fixture or a serene painting and tall vase, layer accents that play up colors and textures. It’s a subtle way to bring depth to a minimalist space.

winter decor bedroomThe Bedroom

A luxurious and heavily layered bedroom is the true heart of a winter home. Because let’s face it, this is the one space we’ll be spending the most time in, morning and night. That means soft textures galore, colors that soothe, and a room that’s endlessly cozy and filled with natural light.

The Key Bedroom Elements:

Lots of cozy layers. This goes without saying. Winter calls for piles of pillows, throws, and textiles on textiles. Fur blankets, chunky knits, wool duvets… you name the texture, there’s a place for it here. Another essential cozy element? Pops of leafy greenery.

The most neutral palette. More than any other room, the bedroom should have a crisp neutral palette. It’s all about whites and grays. The key is to give it a wintry cool look that feels luxe and comfy.

A hint of high-contrast color. With all the white and grays, hints of black will help ground the room and give it more dimension. The best accent is a fluffy Moroccan rug or a modern black-framed mirror that reflects light but also makes for a sculptural focus.
