how to soften a black and white room

how to soften a black and white room

While I love black and white decor, often it can look too stark and cold.   But not this home.  This is very much a monochrome home but there is lots of softness added through natural, earthy tones like sand and beige.  In addition to the soft colours, there are also lots of different textures which add warmth and bring the whole space together.  So if you’re wondering how to make a black and white room cosy, this is the answer.

Plants too add so much to a space and that large olive tree is just stunning.  I’ve always wanted an olive tree inside but I’m so afraid I’ll kill it because I’ve killed every plant I’ve ever owned!  For now I’ll just admire this one.

Another striking thing about this home (which again is always seen in Scandi interiors) is feature lighting.  This home has it in every room and it adds so much to the look of the spaces.  If you only take one bit of inspiration from this apartment, let it be the statement lighting as it can transform any room in your home.

The modern black and white decor of this living and dining room is beautifully contrasted with antique touches like the stunning fireplace and the antique plant pots.  There is also a lot of natural light in this room as the three big windows have been left bare which is how the Scandinavians tend to maximise natural light.

There are two bedrooms in this apartment – one a cute kids room and the other the main bedroom which is very small.  The kids room is decorated in white and grey with touches of black. I especially love the furry light which creates such a fun and cosy looking feature.  The main bedroom is simply decorated but once again has a feature light.  There are also plants in both bedrooms which is a great idea.  It’s reminded me to add a nice plant to my bedroom.

The kitchen is a simple white one but it’s the floor, dining table, lighting and accessories that really bring this room to life.  The wooden floor has been painted in a striking black and white chequered pattern which looks so good and doesn’t look busy because everything has been kept mainly black and white.  Once again we have touches of natural wood and beige to soften the monochrome look.  The round dining table and chairs are perfect for this room because they provide contrast and soften the angular lines of the rest of the kitchen.

There is so much to love about this apartment.  I’m totally inspired by the black and white decor because it has been done so well – it doesn’t look cold or stark at all.  In fact it looks so cosy and warm.  My favourite room is the living and dining room with all the natural light and the antique fireplace. What’s your favourite part of this Scandinavian home?
