You need to visit Nicaragua and you need to do it now. We’ve all heard the hype about Costa Rica, it’s the world’s new favorite tourist destination in Central America. I was there four years ago, before it became this booming tourist hotspot. Now, people are flocking there for outdoors adventures, beautiful jungles and beaches, and a taste of life in Central America. Costa Rica is overrun with tourists, but its neighbor, Nicaragua hasn’t hit the spotlight yet!
What does that mean for you? It’s the perfect place to escape to, before everyone figures out how great it is. Here are the top 5 reasons you need to visit Nicaragua now:
1) It’s budget-friendly
Because Nicaragua isn’t a top travel destination (yet!), it doesn’t have the demand or high prices of other destinations. It’s so cheap to get here, stay, eat and play. For example: I stayed at a really nice boutique hotel, housed in a collection of jungle huts, with an awesome community feel, great food, yoga, surf and yachting – all for the price of a hostel dorm bed in Europe. Your money will take you further and you’ll have more fun for your money. Come while you can before prices go up.
2) Where else can you go Volcano Boarding?
The first and ONLY place in the world where you can is in Leon, Nicaragua. It’s a crazy thrill ride, and even though it scared me to death, it was also the most exciting experience of my life. Get on top of the extreme sports trend and go for a ride down this volcano. Go now to experience this before any of your friends have even heard of it, and before this sport reaches other destinations.
3) Unspoiled Beaches
There are only a couple of beaches here that have been truly discovered and built up as beach towns, but beyond that you have loads of options for under-the-radar beach destinations. Nicaragua has long coastlines on the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and a massive lake in the middle, so there is no shortage of waterfront options to enjoy. The Pacific coast has lots of great surfing, if you’re up for it!
4) The Indulgent Food Scene
Sharing many of the same influences as Mexico, Nicaraguan cuisine is unbelievably tasty. Expect lots of rice- and tortilla-based dishes, abundant use of beans, and really flavorful meats. These can be as spicy as you care to take them. Oh, and don’t feel bad if you go totally crazy for the fresh fruit, it’s amazing. You’re going to want to get in on this culinary scene as soon as possible, especially if you’re like me and will travel huge distances for a great meal.
5) It’s Going to be BIG
I was seriously blown away by Nicaragua, by its adventure sports, its beaches and boating, its food and its people, and by its beautiful untouched landscapes. Nicaragua is going to be the next Costa Rica – I’m calling it.
