Like Airbnb said, this coastal town in the South Island is their No. 1 destination for 2019. A 7.8 magnitude earthquake destroyed much of the area in 2016, but Kaikoura is already on the up and up. You’ll not only be contributing to the rebuilding of the community, but you’ll also get to experience the area’s beauty and see a ton of whales and seals.
You don’t have to sacrifice the city for islands, or vice-versa, with this destination. But if you’re looking for something a bit more remote, Xiamen is also home to Kulangsu, and island that caters to pedestrians by being free of vehicles. The seafood is supposed to be incredible, too!
