A far cry from its previously shaky state, these days the Hayes House stands on firm foundations. The Newcastle home was hit hard by an earthquake in the late eighties but instead of walking away, previous owners Lyn and John Hayes took on the task of painstakingly restoring the heritage home. In fact the house takes its name as an ode to the blood, sweat and tears these two ‘Novacastrians’ (Newcastle locals) put into preserving its historical charm. Today, the restored home is now a boutique accomodation designed by GatherStudio, so you too can share an appreciation for what has gone before.

When you think of a home away from home, the Hayes House is exactly what should spring to mind. Owner Tracy is well-versed in travelling with her three kids and knew the expense of often not fitting in a single apartment. With three bedrooms, the Hayes House was ideal for long and short term family accomodation. The house needed to cater for six guests, with the practical addition of king beds that can be split into singles —  a comfortable stay in all capacities.

Structurally sound, the home was tastefully opened up at the rear by stacker doors and louvre windows. The rest of the work was carried out in the interiors following a simple brief: the house should be warm and welcoming to guests. Quality furnishings, fixtures and fitting were a must, relying on a palette of soft beige and charcoal and dotted by  pastel blue. By creating neutral spaces, GatherStudio allowed for individual details in dressing each room, and has proudly kept to a local theme. The house is a gallery of Newcastle’s local artistic talent, currently showcasing the work of James Stephenson. For that extra bespoke feeling, GatherStudio has introduced handmade ceramics from Clay Canoe, adding a ‘Wabi Sabi‘ touch of earthy calm to your stay.

Often when travelling with kids, you have to choose between style and practicality and it is the latter that takes priority. Thanks to GatherStudio, the Hayes House is a thoughtful blend of the versatility and ease of your own home. We couldn’t be happier the quaint Hayes House was rescued from disrepair all those years ago.

‘I wanted my guests to look forward to coming home to Hayes House after their day’s outings. I wanted it to be more than a place to stay, I wanted it to be part of the experience.’
