Get organised with this kitchen notice board diy

kitchen notice board diyAre you one of those super-organised people?  If you are, look away now.  For the rest of us, I’ve got a fab kitchen notice board DIY that will help you stay organised.

This (faux) leather and wood ladder is a stylish way to keep reminders, notes and inspiration right in front of you.  For me, if I don’t write it down I don’t remember.  Or I end up spending ages trawling through messages and emails to find info that I could have kept right in front of me on a noticeboard.

I knew I needed some kind of kitchen notice board but I wanted more than a cork board as I wanted it to hold essential lists and reminders as well as inspiration and other bits and pieces.  So I came up with this leather and wood ladder.  I went for faux leather as it’s a lot easier to work with and also it doesn’t stretch as much as real leather.  But you can use real leather if you prefer.

MATERIALS:
2 x wooden dowels 20.5mm (approx ¾”)
saw
sand paper
black faux leather
heavy duty fabric scissors
ruler,  pencil, tape measure
glue gun

staple gun
4 x wall plugs and screws (to hang up)

Start by cutting the dowels with a saw. I went for a height of 1.7 metres (67″).  Sand the ends that were cut to make them smooth.

Take your faux leather and mark out 4 strips of 4cms (1.5″) wide by 110cms (44″) long. I marked the back of the faux leather with a blue ballpoint pen and ruler.  Cut these strips.

For the ladder measurements, here’s what I did (but you can customise as you like):
distance of approx 39cms (15.5″) between the dowels
Between the rungs, I went for different sized gaps so I could hang different sized things:
first strap is 20 cms from the top (approx 8″)
next strap comes after a gap of 23 cms (approx 9″)
next strap after a gap of 42 cms (approx 6.5″)
last strap after a gap of 33 cms (approx 13″).

To assemble the ladder, start by laying the dowels parallel to each other, making sure they are straight and the right distance apart.  I used a tape measure to keep things the right distance. Using a pencil and ruler, measure out and draw marks for where the four straps will go.

Lay the leather straps under the dowels and then bring them over around the dowels.  It’s easiest if you do one strap at a time.  Use your glue gun to glue the strap around the dowel, where you have your pencil markings.  Then with your staple gun, staple the strap to the dowel.  This is the back of the ladder so you won’t see the staples when you put your ladder up. Do this for all 4 straps.

You’ll probably have plenty of extra length on the straps so cut them so that they just overlap at the back. Then using leather glue, stick the front and backs of the straps together.

To hang the ladder up, drill a hole on both the dowels at the tops and bottoms.  Attach to the wall with a wall plug and screw. For a neater look, you can countersink the screws. Make sure to hang it as stretched as possible.

This kitchen notice board diy is perfect to keep reminder notes, menu ideas, words of inspiration, photos and light paper things like that. As it’s made with leather, I don’t recommend hanging anything heavy from it.
