One of the most refreshing remodel moments is the day your out-of-date bathroom joins you in the present. Opening up and brightening a bath, adding modern fixtures, and imparting your creativity through tiles and colors is one of the best parts of giving your home a makeover, and Shannon Wollack (owner) and Brittany Zwickl (partner) of LIFE.STYLE. know that feeling well. Here, they share with us four bathroom makeovers that bid dated design farewell, with flawless results.

Before: Bathroom #1

Describe this project for us a bit. it’s not often we see four bathrooms made over to such a degree in the same house!
The clients have extremely good taste and had decorated most of the house themselves, but all of the bathrooms desperately needed updating so they hired us to help. They had named each guest room and coordinating bathroom after a US city and we stuck to that theme. The bathrooms were the Master, NY, Miami, and LA.

Did your client have a vision or goal in mind for these remodels, or did they leave everything to you?
They definitely had a vision which made collaborating on the design of the bathrooms a lot of fun.  They wanted each bathroom to be designed with American cities they love in mind, while staying true to the Spanish / Mediterranean architecture of the house. They were also expecting a newborn, so we designed a bathroom with her in mind, so things had to be kid-friendly (Miami).

What overall aesthetic would you use to describe these spaces?
  • Timeless / Classic
  • Lived in
  • Current yet maintaining the Spanish inspiration, for example, archways.
  • Refined finishes
  • Artisanal

How did you select the details for these bathrooms? Are there certain elements you find yourself using more than others?

The clients loved the playfulness and patterns of cement tile and other patterned tile so you can see this design aesthetic in three of the four bathrooms.

What was the biggest challenge involved here?
Finishing just in time for a baby to arrive!

What is your favorite memory of this design process?
Creative collaboration with our clients and (quickly) anticipating the arrival of a baby!

What is one thing readers should keep in mind when planning a remodeling project like this one?
Lead-times! There were a couple items that had shipping delays and came close to holding us up!

What is the best reaction you heard to this remodel?
When we posted the photo with the steel shower doors, it went viral on social media. People hadn’t seen that a lot and loved it – they were eager to know where to get them. PS they’re custom. 😉
