Last year someone tried to explain to me that fake flowers were coming back into style. I didn’t believe them. Then I started noticing small things like Beyonce’s pregnancy announcement. I went to my favorite store last month in Paris, Merci, which is the most beautiful concept store in the world, and they had fake flowers everywhere. I’m not sure it has hit the US yet but we decided to make some party decor based on faux flowers.

Good faux flowers can get expensive so we visited several dollar stores to find the best colors and styles for this projects. This project is straightforward but we did use a projector to get the type outline right. I love the idea of using it for a birthday party or wedding. So perfect and flowery for a Spring or Summer party.

Materials needed: Projector, pencil, silk flowers (we bought ours at the local dollar store), wire-cutters, gaffers tape

Step 1: Search online for a cursive typeface that you like. Download the font and use a word processor to type your word as large as possible. Then, project the word onto a large, blank wall and trace lightly with pencil.

Step 2: Use wire-cutters to separate flowers from the bunch. Be sure to leave a 5-6 inches of stem connected for each flower. We used about 30 bunches of flowers in total.

Step 3: Attach a flower to the wall by applying a piece of gaffers tape vertically along the stem, so the tape won’t be seen. Fill in the outline with flowers, starting from the topmost part of the letter and working your way down. Continue to add and layer flowers together to create a fuller look.

Step 4: When you get to the end of the letter, flip the direction of the flower so the stem is pointing in the opposing direction. Fill in the gaps with more flowers, then fill in the remaining letters.
