We’re diving into the 2019 Australian Interior Design Awards with five Residential Decoration nominees to keep tabs on, by names we know and love.

Since their inception 16 years ago, the AIDA Awards have become a much-anticipated hallmark of how we celebrate Australian interior design excellence today. Their shortlist certainly doesn’t stay under wraps for long either; the recently released list for 2019 erupting on Instagram with a suite of unseen images.

We find it incredibly satisfying seeing those recognised for the work in their field, in the 2019 AIDA Shortlist. So much so, we’ve dedicated ourselves to appreciating the respective categories of Residential Decoration and Design, given the sheer range and repertoire. Specifically, Residential Decoration includes projects we’ve already favoured here at est this year – the magnificent Magnolia House by Arent and Pyke, the European-esque Casa Atrio by Biasol and the eccentric Pacific Bondi by Amber Road. That’s without mentioning our show-stopping cover star of est magazine issue #32, Peppertree House by Alwill Interiors and Luigi Rosselli Architects.

We’ve highlighted five projects you should definitely know about that haven’t yet been explored on est, from AIDA’s 2019 Residential Decoration shortlist. Like us, they’re sure to make you exceptionally proud of the design scene down under.

Fitzroy North Residence by Simone Haag

Simone Haag was asked to reinvigorate the original features of a Victorian home in Fitzroy, while local architect Andrew Simpson took on the rear extension. Emphasising the period features and formality of the spaces with a moody palette, Simone Haag has shown her signature hand at interesting objects (yes, we’re talking about that sofa), eclectic art and furnishings.

The Esplanade by Golden

This late 20th century Melbourne home has turned heads not for its Port Phillip bay panorama, but thanks to the design team at Golden. Golden created an interior that doesn’t compete with but certainly rivals the unparalleled views, drenched in a rich textural palette and an unpretentious atmosphere of luxury throughout.

Yarra Valley House by Chelsea Hing

Did someone say terracotta tones in the kitchen? Chelsea Hing is not one to shy away from colour and has absolutely excelled at the warm and wonderful palette within this Yarra Valley home. Tapping into the secluded winery setting, Chelsea Hing has shown us modern Australian style and run with it at every opportunity, creating an authentic aesthetic for this “Aussie beauty”.

Brighton Homestead by Robson Rak Architects and Interior Designers

It’s time to get acquainted with this grand old homestead in Bayside Melbourne. Robson Rak Architects and Interior Designers have pushed the old bones to the front while curating spaces to include some absolute design icons. The best bit – it’s home to a young family. Who said family homes couldn’t dabble in this much sophistication?

Under the Tree by Arent & Pyke

Now this is a home that really gets what it means to have heart and soul. Arent & Pyke are no stranger to designing warm and inviting spaces with an exciting edge to them. On first glance, ‘Under the Tree’ is true to this finesse; a weatherboard home where its Ficus Lyata tree in the stairwell was a springboard for all decisions made.
