Felt Christmas ornament kids can help make

Every year I make ornaments with my kids! My favorite thing to do is preserve their writing and drawings as they grow older so here is another way to do it (here is how we have in year past, hand embroidered versions!). This is an easy gift to personalize too, they can draw whatever the recipient’s favorite thing is, write a little poem, or print a photo they took on to fabric and layer it in there instead!

I’ll be honest, I don’t remember what the drawing on the right even is, we made these as gifts last year and I didn’t get around to blogging about them until now! The big smile-y face makes me so happy though! These are under an hour from start to finish, so no time waiting for paint to dry, etc.

These would make darling little gift tags too, just write or print their name on the cotton fabric layer!

Supplies

Steps

using freezer paper on felt

Step 1- Print or the pattern on to the freezer paper, shiny side down. Iron it on to your felt, shiny side down. Cut carefully around the outside lines only, making 1 full ornament (no heart cut-out). Iron it down again, and cut another one, including cutting out the heart inset.

Step 2- Iron the cut-out on to the cotton scrap and let your kiddo draw on the inside with a pen or pencil and trace over once they’re done. Then cut out around the outer edge.

Step 3- Use freezer paper to cut out the ornament “topper”; you can use pnking shears to trim the bottom edge if desired, I liked the look.

Step 4- Layer the cut-out felt ornament on top of the cotton bulb and sew carefully around the inside edge. You could hand sew as well!

Step 5- Flip it over and trim around the edges, making sure not to cut through the stitching, so you can’t see the white around the edges.

Step 6- Then lay the full ornament behind and sew all the way around the edge, leaving an opening at the top. Use the opening to insert stuffing.

Step 7- Tuck a loop of ribbon/ric rac inside the opening and sew over to close.

Step 8- Time to put the topper on! You can either glue it or sew it. You’re done!
