For this fall wall decor:

  • F-A-L-L cardboard letters (or any letters you like)
  • A long piece of thin wood (this one is 1 inch x 2 feet)
  • ModPodge
  • A paintbrush
  • Fall-themed napkins
  • Twine
  • Small clothespins
  • E-6000 adhesive

Step by step tutorial:

Step 1: decoupage

To start, you’ll need to decoupage the Fall-themed napkins onto the letters.  If the napkins have two layers, separate them so the glue has can soak through the napkin more easily.  I am using a matte ModPodge finish, but it also comes in semi-gloss or a glossy finish, if you prefer a high luster look.

Step 2: lay letters

Begin by laying the letters face down on the napkin.  Trace around the napkin, leaving about a half inch around the edges to create the letter’s outline and cut it out.

Step 3: add modpodge

Paint the top of the letter with a thin layer of the ModPodge.  Be sure to coat the edges as well.

Step 4: lay the napkin

Lay the napkin on top of the letter and coat another layer of ModPodge on top.  You can use your fingers to press down and to ensure that there are no air bubbles in the napkin and that the edges lie flat.  Allow the letters to fully dry.  It should take about an hour, but you can speed that process along with a fan.

Step 5: cut corners

Once dry, flip the letters over and repeat the process, but this time concentrating the ModPodge on the ends and edges.  Cut the corners at a 45 degree angle to allow for easier folding at the inner corners.

Again, allow the letter to fully dry.

Step 6: Add strong adhesive

Using super glue, or another strong adhesive, glue the letters to the wooden stick, and be sure to space them evenly.  A little bit of glue goes a long way.  As you press the letters down, the glue will spread, so use sparingly.

At this point, most of the work is complete.  You can stop here, hang it on the wall and use it as a mini ledge if you want.  An idea would be to place pictures and cards behind the letters; but I like the idea of hanging cards and memories.

Step 7: Add string

Cut a piece of twine that’s long enough to hang below the letters.

Tie the twine around the wooden stick.

Use a clothespin to hang any items that are special to you.  And that’s it!

This can be a great project the whole family can do together to prepare for the new seasons.  Each person can gather some special items to hang, such as photos, childhood artwork or season-related greeting cards to fill it up.  It’s a conversation piece that kids can take a stab at and you can display to family and friends when they visit!
