Redesigned and extended by Drake Design, this contemporary single family house is situated in Melbourne, Australia.
Successfully linking past with present, immediately captivating, Elwood Residence’s timeless façade gives way to a long hallway where soaring ceiling and hardwood floors lead to reconditioned bedrooms and bathrooms. Following leads the way to the new contemporary addition, offering abundant levels of space to unwind, relax, socialise and dine. From here, towering glass doors extend the living outdoors to a sundrenched courtyard, immensely private and unknowingly just a heartbeat from the lively suburb beyond. A steel stringer staircase leads to the upper floor, where the third bedroom/multipurpose room, study area and master bedroom with ensuite are located.
The built form of the home’s frontage has been entirely unchanged and undisturbed by the contemporary addition, while the tired Victorian façade has been completely re-established, continually paying homage to the era. The contemporary extension completely contradicts what came before, while being unimposing and recessive from the street view but striking from all other aspects. The asymmetry displayed in the exterior of the upper storey provided the residence with a contrasting architectural approach to the built form from the existing building to the new addition while the minimalistic and modest materials allow for a clear material distinction between the two.
With a new kitchen/living/dining area being the core of Elwood Residence at ground level, an extension of a master bedroom, ensuite and additional bedroom/multipurpose room upstairs, the addition provided more than ample space to allow the family to live and grow for many years and not be hampered by the compact size of inner city living. The courtyard creates an immensely private space for the family that reasons a sense of seclusion from the outside bustling world just steps away from the home’s front door.
