Begin by wrapping the yarn around and around the cardboard square until you have something that looks like the photo below.

While grasping the yarn on the left side, cut the yarn in a straight line along the other end with your right hand (or vise versa if you’re left-handed).

Cut an 8″ piece of yarn in the same color and wrap it around the center of the pile of yarn. Knot it and pull the knot tightly down to the pile of yarn.

Keep the yarn folded in half, and tie one end of an 18″ piece of yarn around it about a half an inch from the top of the tassel. Tuck the short end of the 18″ piece under and wrap the long end around this same spot until you have about 8″ left.

Tie the end and then use the tapestry needle to tuck it down through the center of the tassel. Trim the ends of the tassel so they are straight. Repeat this process until you have four tassels of one color and three each of the other colors.

Thread the tassels onto the baker’s twine and spread them out evenly, alternating colors. Hang it up with washi tape and you’re finished!

You don’t necessarily have to save this garland only for Valentine’s Day… you can try other colors for different seasons and holidays. And you can string the tassels on different materials too, like rope if you want a nautical theme or leather cord for a super refined look.

It’s also cheap and easy to make… I had all of the materials already, so it didn’t cost me a penny!
