I’m hoping that’s a yes, because that’s what’s today’s project is all about … mason jars that hang … and look pretty … with candles inside . Yup. That’s what I’m calling them. Hanging mason jar candle holders with a rustic twist!
Before I get started with the tutorial, here’s one little fact that may just baffle you… are you ready for this?
Ok… so, Ball mason jars aren’t a big deal here in the UK…………
Yes you heard right … They just aren’t.
When many of my British readers and friends were like, err…what’s ball mason? Why would you do that to your fridge? Why ??? Granted my painted fridge would provoke that kind of response from even the most open-minded of people but still… I just assumed everyone knew about ball mason jars.
I guess not. Crazy huh?
How to Make a Hanging Mason Jar Candle Holder

Materials (to make one)
- Ball Mason jar 945ml (1 qt) (or any alternative glass jar will do)
- — a US equivalent is here
- Wooden planks (soft wood) W 12cm D 2cm (the closest US equivalent is a 1×6, which is slightly wider than this)
- Wooden planks W 3cm d 1.8cm thickness (the rough US equivalent is a 1×2)
- 2″ iron cup hook
- Ronseal dark oak varnish or any alternative colour stain
- Sand paper 180 grit
- Picture hooks
- Liquid nail glue
- Glass Drill bit
- White gravel stones
- Battery operated candle like this
Tutorial
MAKING THE MASON JARS HANG
You will need to make two holes in each side of your glass jars so you can hook through the pendant chain. To do this, attach your glass drill bit to an electric drill and cut into the glass about 0.5cm from the top of the glass lid on both sides (make sure you remove the mason jar lids). Please ensure you wear protective eyes wear and mask for this step. Drilling glass is no easy business!
We used the smallest drill bit from the glass drill set I linked to above (the holes were slightly bigger than 3mm). Keep in mind the size of your chain when carrying out this part. Too small and the chain wont fit through!
Next hook the ends of the pendants through both holes you have made .The chain we bought had slits in each of the rungs. Using pliers and a flat head screw driver we were able to bend the rungs to fit through the holes (see image below). We also took off 6 of the rungs because we realised that the 50cm chain was too long!
Finally add gravel and your candles to your mason jars! I used battery operated candles as I wasn’t to sure how safe normal candles would be in a mason jar .
MAKING THE RUSTIC WOODEN HANGING SHELF
Use a circular or jigsaw to cut two 4ocm length pieces of wood from the 12cm by 2cm wood. The rough American equivalent would be two 16-inch pieces of 1×6, which will be a bit wider than the 12 cm, so you could cut them down if you prefer.
Apply the liquid nails glue to the longer side of on of the wooden planks and stick the two sides together. For best results leave it overnight to completely dry.
Next saw the 3cm d 1.8cm wood into two 12cm parts. The rough US equivalent is a piece of 1×2, and if you used a full width 1×6 in the previous part, your cut length with be approximately 11 inches.
Using the liquid nails again place these across the top and bottom of your wooden base ( see image below)
Cut a third wooden piece from the 3cm by 1.8cm wood (US 1×2). You will have to do this at an angle of approximately 48 Degrees to make a z shape. This is also attached with liquid nails .
Stain with the Ronseal varnish. However if you are using a stain alone, you will also have to add a clear coat of varnish to seal it. I added a few knocks and scrapes with a hammer to make the wood look a little more weathered .
Once the varnish is dry, sand it back with sandpaper to show some of the wood grain.
Don’t forget to screw in the cup hook to the top of the shelf for the mason jar to hang from.
Add picture hooks to the back of the wooden frame and your shelf is done! Now get those mason jars hanging!
