This week I have a fun fashion DIY for you inspired by one of my latest online shopping excursions. It was great, window shopping galore AND all at the the comfort of my own living room while binge watching the latest season of some random show on Hulu. Don’t get me wrong, I am all about in store visits (I’m a touch-er and try-it-on-er) there’s something exciting about seeing something in person but in case, I saw the coolest Rebecca Minkoff sunglasses case and I was like, HELLO.
I am a sunglasses kind of girl. The bigger the better and I wear them constantly. I ‘m also very picky. VERY PICKY. They cannot be too expensive – mother of 4 problems. The lenses cannot be too transparent – sometimes you gotta hide. And of course, the cannot be too small because I gotta keep my delicate skin around my eyes protected – thirty something problems. So keep those sunglasses are super important once I can find a good pair, I have not time for scratches and finger prints.
Enter the . Probably one of the cleverest things I have ever seen, unfortunately, they are sold out. Boo! So you, you know me, I made my own and I’m showing you how to recreate for yourself! (so easy)
DIY Rebecca Minkoff Inspired – Sunnies Pouch
Materials:
- Yep, this is a great idea for those left over pieces of fabric.
- 7” Zipper
- Your
- (the pink one)
- Steam iron
Directions:
- Find your fabric and smoothly lay it on your cutting mat.
- Sign in to your Design Space Account and then visit the link to my Cricut Project, .
If you have not signed up for a Design Space Account with Circuit, I highly recommend it.
IT. IS. FABULOUS. - Once opened, hide the sunglasses you do not want to cut out by clicking on the “eyes” in the Layers window on the right (as seen below).
- Prepare your mats, fabric and vinyl. Follow the manufacturing instructions, and specific material types. For example, to make the one below, my settings were: cotton fabric and iron on foil. And cut.
- Next, whip out your Easy Press, CENTER your iron-on in place and using the manufacturing instructions as your guide, iron on your foil.
AND while you are at it, iron your other fabric projects and tomorrow’s blouse, and the kid’s pants. The Easy Press heats up so fast and takes all the guess work out of whether or not your iron-on is securely in place. Not too hot, not too cold, and no worries about burning your project. IT IS GENIUS.
Once it dries, let’s move onto the sewing part…
- We will start by adding a zipper. With the right sides facing together, sew ½” seam on the flat side of your case, at the end of each side.
- After that, fold the lengthwise fabric down ½” and iron in place. Repeat on the other side.
- Next, pin and sew your zipper in place.
- With right sides still facing each other, match and pin the ends together and sew ¼ away from the edge of your fabric. Add some stay stitching around the pointed corner in the middle of your pouch.
- Clip around the perimeter of your seams; especially around and inside the pointed center.
- Your pouch is almost complete! Turn your pouch right side out and steam iron your curved seams so they lay flat. You WILL need a pressing cloth when you try to iron over your vinyl – you do not risk melting your awesome new project!
- And that’s it!
This is a really quick project that I had a lot of fun making and I thought it would also be a great idea for those times I want to use it with my actual glasses. I don’t think my husband ever uses his case on business trips so I might him a couple of these his glasses will have a little extra protection. Maybe I could try felt or faux leather next time – the Cricut Maker can easily cut through both of those textiles! I love this thing!
