If you ask me, popsicle sticks are one of the absolute best things to use when it comes to crafting with my kids. There are just so many different things you can turn them into! Lately, I’ve been on the lookout for book related crafts because my kids are finally getting to an age where they’re starting to read novels independently, so they actually need things like bookmarks! That’s how I found myself teaching them how to turn a simple popsicle stick into an adorable flower shaped bookmark. I liked the finished product so much that I decided to make another one any lay all the steps out so other people can learn how to make them nice and easily as well.

For this project, you’ll need:
- A popsicle stick
- Red cardboard
- Yellow paper
- Scissors
- A glue stick
- Ribbons (white and floral)
Step 1:
Gather your materials!
Step 2:
With your yellow paper turned landscape, draw a line from the top to the bottom about an inch in from the right hand edge. Then draw an inch wide circle and several inch-tall petal shapes with straight bottom edges and tops shaped like a hearts. Cut out these red shapes and your yellow strips. I cut about eight petals in total.
Step 3:
Turn your yellow strip so it is longer horizontally and fold it in half, so it’s only half as tall as it was before. Along the full length of your yellow strip on the creased side, make small cuts from the bottom edge upwards, only about a quarter of the way towards the top where the edges meet. This creates a sort of fringed effect.
Step 4:
Turn your yellow strip vertically and apply some glue on one side at the short bottom edge. Starting rolling the edge in on itself and continue rolling it upwards. Apply glue at the other end and stick it down when your yellow roll meets it. Set this aside for now.
Step 5:
Build the base of your flower and its petals by applying glue to the backs of the petal pieces near the straight bottom edges and placing them around the outside of the red circle so they overlap slightly in layers.
Step 6:
Apply glue on the rolled side of your yellow piece, on the bottom underneath your fringed cuts. Stick it flat side down in the centre of your red flower, where all the straight petal edges overlap. Feel free to bend your fringed yellow centre back a little to make it look more splayed and voluminous.
Step 7:
Cut a strip from your ribbon that is the same length as your popsicle stick. Next, apply glue all along its length on one flat side and stick the ribbon down flat, smoothing down any creases.
Step 8:
Turn your ribbon into a little bow! Cut a piece about four inches long and apply some glue in the middle along its length. Take each end and curve it inwards, towards the middle, to create a looped shape, letting an inch or so of the ribbon’s end hang below the loop. Stick that piece in the glue you applied in the centre and then repeat the process with the other side.
Step 9:
Apply glue to the back of your red flower and stick it to one end of your ribboned popsicle stick. This is not the top of your flower!
Step 10:
Apply glue to the back of your bow, in the centre of its back side, and stick if below the yellow centre of your flower, resting on the red petals.
