DIY Pom Pom Travel PouchBecause I’m constantly traveling back and forth to New York, I have a bad habit of just tossing smaller items and jewelry in my purse and hitting the road. Seriously, the bottom of my purse was a waste land of spare change, loose earrings, and candy before this project.  Because I’ve damaged and lost too many of my favorite items this way, I decided to give a plain travel pouch a colorful coral makeover to help keep me organized! Here’s how:

Time: 45 minutes

– Rit All-Purpose Dye in Coral (available at JoAnn’s, Meijer’s, select Michael’s and Hobby Lobby starting in April!)

– White cotton travel pouch

– Bowl + gloves for dyeing

– Pom poms

– Tacky glue

DIY Pom Pom Travel PouchI have been a fan of the color coral for such a long time which is why I’m so excited Rit came out with this new shade, and even more so that spring just around the corner (c’mon winter, be over already).

Because the pouch is smaller, you can dye it right in a large bowl as long as the fabric is able to move freely. You’ll want to wet it in warm water prior to dyeing to remove any finishes that may interfere with dye absorption. Fill with hot water and add dye. The pouch I used is made of cotton, so I also added 1/2 cup of salt to the dye bath. Let the pouch be in the bath for about 15 minutes, while stirring occasionally. Once it’s reach the desired color, rinse with cold water until the water is clear. To enhance the color and reduce bleeding, use Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative immediately after dyeing and before washing. Wash with warm water and detergent by hand and then let dry.

Before adding your pom poms, iron your pouch. Then, with a small dab of tacky glue, adhere your poms to your pouch and lay flat to dry.

DIY Pom Pom Travel PouchWhen everything is all good and dry, fill with your favorite items, and toss in your bag! If you’re anything like me, the bright coral and pom poms should help keep you organized!
