DIY Modern candle holder

DIY Modern candle holder

Now that we’re heading in to the cooler, darker months of the year, I’m all about making my home as cosy as possible.  While I love the warmth and light of the summer months, there is something so special about curling up on the sofa with a chunky blanket and a good book when it’s freezing outside.  To add extra cosiness to a cold winter evening, I love lighting a candle or two.

I recently realised that I don’t have many candle holders – they all seem to have broken over the years with our various house moves.  So I decided to make some of course!  I like the idea of having a mix of tall and short candle holders so I’ll be making some more over the coming months.  For the first one I’ve gone with a short-ish candle holder which is perfect to place a tall candle in.  To vary the height you could place one tall and one shorter candle in each holder.

I’m using these candle holders on my coffee table as I spend most of my life on the sofa!  These would look great on your dining table especially when you have guests.

Materials:
mini terracotta pots (3.6 x 3.5 cms) (US readers find similar here)
black acrylic paint
gorilla glue

This DIY candle holder couldn’t be easier to make.  Paint your terracotta pots – don’t forget to paint the inside too.  Do 2-3 coats until you have good coverage and can no longer see the terracotta colour.  Once dry, glue the bases of the two pots together.  Leave to dry and you can give it one more coat of paint so that the join is less visible.

I had these tapered candles which were a tiny bit too thick for the candle holder so I simply shaved the ends a bit with a sharp knife. Once shaved, they fit perfectly.  Otherwise, if you have thicker candles, you could go up a size or two with the terracotta plant pots.

Here’s a video on how to make this DIY modern candle holder:

I painted them black as I plan to use them with white candles as soon as I get some.  But you can paint them in any neutral tone like sand, grey or nude or even white and they’ll work well with many different coloured candles.

I made a pair of these candle holders but since they’re so easy to make, I’m thinking of making more in a different colour – maybe white or a pale sandy beige.

What colour will you go for?
