We explore how Nordic style surfaces in the kitchen with Swedish-based designer Nordiska Kök.

Since the early 20th century Nordic design has led a harmonious movement towards simplicity and functionality in the home. Far from trend-focused and more nuanced than the blanket term of ‘Scandinavian style’, we know there’s no better place to uncover this revered style than in the kitchen.

For authentic Nordic style in the kitchen we look to Swedish kitchen designer Nordiska Kök. Nordic design is deeply ingrained in the Nordiska Kök ethos and processes, where all of their bespoke kitchens are made by hand just outside of Gothenburg, Sweden.

According to Nordiska Kök creative director and founder Johan Lundkvist, Nordic style is simplicity at its best – clean and minimalistic. “We create timeless kitchens inspired by nature; the beautiful archipelagos, the open fields and the mountains to the north,” Johan says. “For us, sustainability is number one.”

In partnership with Cosentino, we’re exploring the essential ingredients to four Nordic style kitchen projects by Nordiska Kök. While each kitchen may vary aesthetically, all share the fundamental Nordic design values of craftsmanship, timelessness, a soft and neutral palette and a mindful connection with the natural environment.

The Green and Grey Shaker Kitchen

Co-owner of Swedish real estate business Alvhem Sandra Guerrero enlisted Nordiska Kök to design a kitchen for her newly built home. Sandra had a clear vision for a colour palette of green, beige and grey, calling on Nordiska Kök to realise this in a shaker-style Nordic kitchen.

Working closely with Sandra on every detail, Nordiska Kök decided Cosentino’s Silestone was the ideal fit for the kitchen countertop, being extremely durable, with an appearance like stone. “A quality countertop ensures durability.  A kitchen is made to be lived in, to cook and to be a great hangout space,” says Johan. “But most of all, the countertop should be timeless so you don’t get bored of it after a few years, to leave the lightest possible footprint on our world resources.”

The Silestone Cemento countertop is in quality company too, with cabinet hardware by Byggfabrike, a Lampe Gras Model 214 Wall Lamp in the corner of the space and Gubi Semi Pendant light overhead.

The Food Pharmacy Kitchen

Together with Alexandra Ogonowski, Nordiska Kök designed this dark oak kitchen for creator of Swedish health and nutrition publisher Food Pharmacy, Mia Clase. “When designing this kitchen, we started with the nutrition hunters’ needs in mind. The result? A beautiful combination of kitchen and pharmacy,” Mia says. Infused with the publisher’s ethos of food being ‘nature’s pharmacy’, the kitchen design reinterprets the classic pharmacy desk, with large wooden drawers and open shelf space above.

The Food Pharmacy kitchen fuses classic oak cabinetry with Cosentino’s Dekton Aura 15, relaying Nordic design’s inherent connection to nature. The Dekton Aura 15 surface honours Calacatta and Carrara marbles while being a hard-wearing alternative from these natural stones. “Cosentino have a great range of beautiful and easy-care composite stones,” Johan says. “We recommend them to our customers as a compliment to our locally produced stones.”

“A quality countertop ensures durability. A kitchen is made to be lived in, to cook and to be a great hangout space. But most of all, the countertop should be timeless...

The Minimalist’s Kitchen

Nordiska Kök designed this sleek and muted in-frame Nordic kitchen for Cooee Design founder Catrine Aberg. Anchored by the Swedish brand’s vases, the entire kitchen space is coated in sand grey – from the herringbone floors, to the walls, hardware and the Silestone Royal Reef countertop. Available as a polished or suede texture, Silestone Royal Reef is made from more than 90 per cent natural quartz, making it a long-lasting choice of countertop.

Cosentino was a natural fit for this entirely customised kitchen, offering a range of countertops to colour match. “With Cosentino’s range of countertops, our customers will most certainly find a countertop that suits the colours and dimensions of their kitchen,” Johan says.

The Soft Shaker Kitchen

Founder of Swedish fashion brand Stylein Elin Alemdar wanted a bespoke kitchen that echoed the same Nordic style and colours of the Stylein brand. Enter Nordiska Kök, who met Elin’s wishes with a well-balanced, light-filled Nordic-style shaker kitchen.

Nordiska Kök designed clean, minimalist cabinetry in the pale green colour of ‘Lindblomsgrön’, topped with Silestone Eternal Calacatta Gold. With gold glints and grey streaks, the Eternal Calcatta Gold pays homage to Calcatta marble. “The Nordic minimalism, the clean lines and the soft colors are the core of everything we do at Stylein,” Elin Alemdar says. “Our collections should last for a long time, be timeless and leave the lightest possible footprint on world resources; values I also share with Nordiska Kök.”
