I have always loved translating different crafts and fabrics into knitting and crochet, and I’m so glad I took the plunge during March’s National Crochet Month to finally dive into a project I’ve had on my “to-make” list for way too long. I have dipped my toe into weaving and macrame before, and while I love those crafts too, I had always wanted to create a crochet wall hanging that could mimic the look but utilize the plethora of stitches, textures, and freedom that crochet offers. Enter the Daybreak Crochet Tapestry.
This masterpiece uses techniques like bobbles, loops, and a herringbone stitch to create a spectacular canvas of flowing textures. Now that I’ve completed this beauty, I have so many ideas for other tapestries! This is not the first time I’ve used loops and bobbles and lots of different yarns in a project. My , , and all use these techniques to create a richly textured fabric that has such a unique and special look. I’ve always loved scrappy projects that use multitudes of little bits of yarn to build interesting fabrics. The first pattern I ever designed was my , and I made the original entirely out of scrap yarns in my stash left over from other projects! As long as you have a basic pattern to follow, there are no rules to how often you change color or yarns to add dimension. That is definitely the case with the Daybreak Crochet Tapestry!
After I decided to move forward with the tapestry idea, I sat down to sketch my concept. I recently traveled to LA to shoot my spring collection, and while staying at my friend’s beautiful home in Laurel Canyon I woke up each morning to the most epic sunrises. I knew I wanted to use this palette for my color story.
When inspiration strikes you gotta grab it, so I headed to Michaels to source all of my supplies. They have the best selection of Lion Brand Yarns, especially Wool-Ease Thick & Quick, and I knew that is what I wanted to use for the primary yarn. I grabbed all of the sunrise-esque colors, plopped them on the floor at the end of the aisle and added in some other textural yarns to mix it up a little. I ended up going with mostly Wool-Ease Thick & Quick, Lion Brand’s new That 70s Yarn, and a skein of Homespun Thick & Quick for a boucle texture. In the pattern below I listed the amount of ounces I used of each yarn, as many of them did not use the entire skein.
I grabbed a dowel rod while I was in the store to hang the tapestry from, but if you’re homebound for the foreseeable future due to COVID-19, this is a great opportunity to get outside and source a big fallen stick of similar size from your yard or a park.
While you are of course welcome to follow the exact instructions below, don’t be afraid to go wild and changes yarns, colors, or stitches whenever you desire! Once you have established the first row of stitches you can really just experiment and get creative. While I had a rough sketch of what I wanted the final product to look like, I actually just played around without having a strict plan and recorded what I did along the way so I could actually write a step by step pattern. I love crochet for the freedom that it offers in this way! And since this is a wall hanging, there isn’t any need to be exact as it won’t need to fit a body.
This is an intermediate level crochet pattern and the techniques involved are single crochet, half double crochet, herringbone half double crochet, loop stitch, bobble stitch, and color changes.

Notes: Wall hanging is worked flat from the top down using a variety of stitches. Turn at the end of each row. Color changes are indicated in [brackets] throughout. To change color, work the last yarn over of the previous stitch with the new color. Instead of cutting yarn at every color change, you can leave it hanging to pick up and use again if it is needed nearby in the following row. Color and stitch chart can be found at the end of the pattern. Refer to chart as you work to see if this is the case. Work is attached to dowel rod after completion.

Cut yarn. Secure and weave in all ends.
Fringe:
Cut several 32”/81cm lengths of remaining yarn and holding two strands together, use larks head knots to attach fringe evenly to the bottom of the tapestry. To do so, fold the strands in half, insert the hook up through a st at the bottom of the tapestry, place folded loop around the hook and draw it back down through the st, then use the hook to grab the ends and draw them through the folded loop.
Attach dowel rod:
With color A and WS facing, sc along the top edge of the tapestry over the dowel rod. To do so, rejoin the yarn and ch 1, then *holding the dowel rod along the top edge behind the working yarn, insert the hook into the next st, yarn over around the dowel rod and draw up a loop through the st, yarn over around the dowel rod again and draw through both loops the on hook. Rep from * across the top of the tapestry.
