This month I also wanted to address furniture layout when you have a tricky space to furnish. Recently I worked with a client that had a beautiful, open floor plan with high ceilings. However, because of the lack of walls and such an open, flowing space, she was having a hard time coming up with a furniture arrangement. I’m a huge fan of the open floor plan, but it does create some design challenges. So I wanted to also give you some design ideas if you are dealing with that type of layout yourself!

This Farmhouse Family Room Mood Board not only works if you love a Farmhouse, rustic style, but it also works quite well with an open floor plan layout. I incorporated a few rustic elements like this coffee table and industrial side tables, but also mixed in some more cottage style elements. Items like this woven tray, casual slipcovered white sofa, and white ceramic potted plants add in natural elements into the space. So read on to get some tips of how to create this look for yourself!

How to Choose Farmhouse Furniture

No matter your style, I always suggest using neutral, classic pieces for your largest furniture pieces. This white slip-covered Pottery Barn sofa fits a myriad of styles, including this Farmhouse look. If you are scared of using a white sofa, this slipcover comes off for easy washing! I have this same sofa in my own house, and we are going on 12+ years with it (it’s withstood 3 children and 3 dogs over the years!). But you can also use a light tan, taupe, or soft gray sofa as well. This same sofa comes in a straight arm and upholstered versions as well.

This Farmhouse Living Room is rocking light beige sofas:

Another classic piece for a Farmhouse style Family Room is a leather chair. This Pottery Barn version has a more traditional, rolled arm look. If you love more of a Modern Farmhouse look, choose a chair with straight lines and a sleek look. Leather is one of the most durable, easy to clean fabrics you can use, and only gets better with age.

A rustic coffee table not only fits the Farmhouse style, but I think is one of the most practical pieces you can use in a Family Room! Our coffee tables get a LOT of abuse, so I love the idea of having a rustic, distressed one that helps hide scratches and wear-and-tear. You can create a simple vignette on your coffee table with a tray. Add in a vase, and a small stack of books with a small potted plant or décor object. This ceramic potted plant from the Mood Board works with the Farmhouse look, but feel free to swap in a succulent or different style plant.

Layering In Farmhouse Accessories

You can’t go wrong with a striped pillow. And I’ll be honest here, I’m a self-proclaimed stripe addict (just ask my husband, I have a closet full of stripes)! Whether it’s a throw pillow, a rug, or a new sweater, I can’t get enough or horizontal stripes. But for good reason-you can get this pattern in any color, any style, and stripes never go out of style. For a Farmhouse look, try a ticking stripe mixed with a wider stripe. Add in a couple of solid prints, or a small patterned pillow for a layered look.

Other accessories such as this glass table lamp, woven tray, and potted plant are simple, neutral, and rustic items that work with a Fixer Upper style. A sisal or jute rug, like the one shown in the Mood Board, are not only neutral, but really durable and easy to clean. Having a simple area rug allows you to bring in some pattern in items that are easier to swap out, such as a throw pillow.

And finally, when you are looking for Farmhouse style art, you are going to find a lot of word art and simple black and white printables. I loved this Christmas tree sign for it’s simple but modern look.

Tips and Tricks to Working with an Open Floor Plan

Like I mentioned before, this Farmhouse Family Room Mood Board works really well with an open floor plan layout. Here are some more tips for making this furniture arrangement work

ONE. Use two identical sofas (or loveseats) facing across from each other. Float your sofas in the middle of the room with a coffee table in the middle. Be sure to think about the purpose of the room. If it is a TV watching space, be sure it is comfortable to view the TV from the sofa locations

TWO. Sectional sofas can also work really well for an open floor plan, especially with a large room or one with high ceilings. An extra large sectional is substantial enough to fill up a large room. This large -scale piece works well: you can either float it in your room, or pull it about a foot away from a wall

THREE.Use a large area rug to ground all of the furniture. When you have an open floor plan, you want your furniture groupings to look purposeful and not lost in your room. Using a large area rug (8’x10 or larger) where all of your furniture fronts are on the rug work well

FOUR. Fill up floor space with side table or floor lamps. If you need to fill up your open floor plan space, adding items such as floor lamps and accent tables use up the space, and give plenty of options for your guests.

FIVE. Use a large scale chandelier. The worst thing you could do for a large or open floor plan is having puny furniture or a too-small light fixture. If you have high ceilings, keep the bottom of your light fixture at around 7’-8’ above your floor

SIX. Use a console or sofa table. If your sofa(s) are floating, adding a console table behind it is a great way to not stare at the back of a sofa. You can add décor, storage baskets, or even lamps on it

SEVEN. Leave plenty of walkways around your furniture. Leave at least two different ways people can walk easily through your furniture arrangement. A 36” walkway is comfortable, but I wouldn’t go less than 30”.

While this console table is against the wall, you could also use this behind a sofa:
