Explore a bright and bold Byron Bay retreat by Mac Design Studio, where an enviable collection of design objects lies around every corner.

High up in the hinterland and overlooking Coopers Shoot, Byron Bay, stands Mac Design Studio’s latest achievement; the Coopers Shoot Coastal Retreat. Entrusted with the task of designing a coastal home that relishes in its serenity, Mac Design Studio have invited the outside in, while injecting colour and personality at every opportunity. Now a treasure trove of design pieces, Coopers Shoot retreat makes for a happy, unpretentious beachside abode.

First and foremost, Mac Design Studio wanted to create a real sense of arrival to the property. The entrance is marked by large, glazed doors that connect the exterior to the entrance hallway. The entrance is clad in wall panelling by Scarchi & Boston that, alongside bleached herringbone floors, remain a consistent feature throughout the home and lead the way to the double-height first floor. Split over two storeys, the upper floor is privy to first-class views of the surrounds, consisting of an open plan lounge and master bedroom suite, with additional bedrooms downstairs.

The colour selection on the first floor takes inspiration from the beachside locale, where the turquoise kitchen meets sky blue walls that also line the dining space. Sitting up at the electrically-coloured kitchen are rich leather Utility Stools by Neri&Hu for Stellar Works, complemented by the timber joinery hardware.

The dining space brings together the iconic Nelson Saucer Bubble Lights by George Nelson for Herman Miller, Otway Trestle Tables by leading Australian furniture brand Kett Studio and the Belleville Armchair by Ronan & Erwan Bourollec for Vitra. Ready to cater for a dinner party, the dining room also includes the James Bar Cart by Yabu Pushelberg for Stellar Works.

The dining space features Nelson Saucer Bubble Lights by George Nelson for Herman Miller from Living Edge, Otway Trestle Tables by Kett Studio for Cosh Living and the Belleville Armchair by Ronan & Erwan Bourollec for Vitra from Living Edge.

The main living area may not share the same coloured walls, but draws on the existing palette through the Duchess and Kingfisher Agra rugs by Armadillo&Co. and blush pink Votteler Chair Low Back by Arno Votteler for Walter Knoll. This space is also anchored by the fireplace and cabinetry that conceals the entertainment system, while creating a place to display meaningful artefacts. Some of the objects and art were sourced from the local Byron Bay area, including pieces from Pop & Scott, Suvira McDonald, Sunday Supply Co and Jordana Henry.

Mac Design Studio have designed a Byron Bay retreat reflective of its unique landscape, while brimming with charisma, colour and a well-curated mix of furnishings.
