One of Daniel’s latest projects reveals how this ambition was closely shared by client and designer, through the renovation of an existing heritage home on Conigrave St in Hunters Hill, Sydney. Appreciating the delicate period features while introducing modern and monochromatic details, Daniel Boddam has designed a home grounded in a sense of renewed sophistication and refined simplicity.
The owners approached Daniel after discovering one of the designer’s previous heritage projects, resonating with the overall aesthetic. From there a brief was developed based on a gentle, pared-back approach to modernise the home while preserving its original charm.
“Refreshingly, the clients don’t watch television,” Daniel says. “The living rooms were to be designed to have a restful atmosphere for reading, where their book collection forms part of the decoration.” The clients also requested a more generous dining area for family gatherings.
To create a more fluid and functional home, Daniel decluttered the footprint and provided structure to the living areas, while opening up every opportunity for natural light and harbour views. “Door heights were raised making the proportions of the room feel airier,” Daniel explains. “New walls were created to inset bookshelves that form part of the architecture.” Together with preserving the original Victorian detail, Daniel subtly introduced new elements such as doors, skirting, architraves and joinery to feel as though they have always been there.
