We wander through the soft and elegant interiors of a recently renovated Hunters Hill home by Daniel Boddam, designed to epitomise quiet luxury.

Quiet luxury defines a reprieve from the noisy, always-on world we live in; a concept that has become more pertinent than ever in the homes we create. At the frontline of quiet luxury is designer Daniel Boddam, who works to distill a tasteful sense of calm, balance and wellbeing in all of his residential projects.

One of Daniel’s latest projects reveals how this ambition was closely shared by client and designer, through the renovation of an existing heritage home on Conigrave St in Hunters Hill, Sydney. Appreciating the delicate period features while introducing modern and monochromatic details, Daniel Boddam has designed a home grounded in a sense of renewed sophistication and refined simplicity.

The owners approached Daniel after discovering one of the designer’s previous heritage projects, resonating with the overall aesthetic. From there a brief was developed based on a gentle, pared-back approach to modernise the home while preserving its original charm.

“Refreshingly, the clients don’t watch television,” Daniel says. “The living rooms were to be designed to have a restful atmosphere for reading, where their book collection forms part of the decoration.” The clients also requested a more generous dining area for family gatherings.

To create a more fluid and functional home, Daniel decluttered the footprint and provided structure to the living areas, while opening up every opportunity for natural light and harbour views. “Door heights were raised making the proportions of the room feel airier,” Daniel explains. “New walls were created to inset bookshelves that form part of the architecture.” Together with preserving the original Victorian detail, Daniel subtly introduced new elements such as doors, skirting, architraves and joinery to feel as though they have always been there.

Each space manifests a classic atmosphere through new pieces layered on traditional foundations. “I wanted the interiors to be eclectic – a blend of local and international pieces,” Daniel says. These spaces to unwind are marked by Daniel Boddam’s sculptural and geometric furniture collection Monument, that relays the permanence of natural materials such as oak, brass, steel and Carrara marble. Both living spaces showcase the collection proudly with the Low Coffee Table and M Side Table.

Additional design highlights include the Ay Illuminate Z2 Cotton Cover pendant from Spence & Lyda, the No.811 Hoffman Chairs by Thonet, Armadillo & Co. rugs, a Mark Tuckey dining table and Jardan sofas. The bathroom and ensuite are kept by grey tones, clean and carefully detailed long Carrara marble custom basins and timber work.

Daniel’s tasteful renovation of this Hunters Hill home avows that quiet luxury is not something to indulge in, rather an imperative to every space in a home.
