Coast to Coast Wrap pattern by Two of Wands

At the beginning of March I embarked on a road trip from Los Angeles to New York with my dear friend Paige (more on that later), and along the way we were completely blown away by the beauty of the landscapes in each part of the country. We fell in love with so many places that we ended up staying in many longer than we planned and having to drive through the dark to our next destination, but this turn of events was wonderfully kismet. Having seen nothing of the place in the dark the night before, each morning we awoke to a totally different and majestic setting.

I was so inspired by all of these different environments along the way, and I kept dreaming of ways to incorporate them into some magnificent piece that could represent this special trip. Every good road trip needs a wrap or a blanket of some sort to go on the journey with you. What better way to capture all of these landscapes than to create an extra large wearable tapestry of the sites!? I knew this piece would need to encompass the trip in both form and function. Read on to learn more about the inspiration behind the Coast to Coast Wrap and discover the free pattern, purchase a printable PDF here, or purchase the knitting kit with all the yarn you’ll need here.

The Coast to Coast Wrap was conceived about half way through, somewhere in the middle of Kansas. I began sketching out ideas and decided on a progression of stripes and mosaic color work to illustrate each place. I love mosaic colorwork because it reminds me of an intricate weaving, and that’s exactly the aesthetic I wanted to create with this piece. Coined by Barbara G. Walker in the 1960s, mosaic knitting is a slip stitch technique using two colors that produces a geometric repetitive pattern that’s much faster, easier, lighter, and stretchier than stranded colorwork.

I chose mosaic patterns that reflected the four main atmospheres we experienced along the way – the waves of the Pacific Coast, the mountains of the southwest, the fences and power lines of the middle of the country, and the sparkling city lights when we arrived at our destination. Each one of these places holds memories from our trip that are so special and unique, so I separated each colorwork section with a variety of stripes to allow each to stand alone and have a “moment.”

Mosaic knitting can be worked in stockinette, garter stitch, or a combination of both. I chose to use a combination, because I wanted the elements in each “location” to stand out with garter stitch bumps. The waves, mountains, powerlines, and city lights appear to pop out from their backgrounds and create a three-dimensional look. The stripes between also represent the roads connecting all of these locales.

Since I wanted to start this as soon as the idea was conceived, I had to work with yarn that I had on hand, and decided on a combination of Lion Brand Wool-Ease (one of my favorites!) and Touch of Alpaca. With so much going on in this piece, I stuck to a neutral palette so as not to distract or make the piece too wild.

Mosaic colorwork may look complicated, but it’s actually incredibly easy and fun once you’ve learned the technique. I’d recommend this pattern as a great way to expand your skills and learn a new tool that can really elevate your work. This is an intermediate level knitting pattern and the techniques involved are the knit stitch, purl stitch, changing colors, slip stitch, color chart reading, and picking up and knitting stitches.

Notes: Wrap is worked in two pieces from end to center, which are then grafted together. Garter edging is added to long sides after main panels are grafted. Pattern is composed of sections of stripes and mosaic colorwork. Coined by Barbara G. Walker in the 1960s, mosaic knitting is a slip stitch technique using two colors. The color worked as the first stitch of the row is considered the dominant color. Each dominant color of the chart is knit (or purled), while the contrast color is slipped. Mosaic knitting can be worked in stockinette or garter stitch, but for the purposes of this pattern it will be worked in a combination of both. One color in each chart will be worked in stockinette, knitting each RS row and purling each WS row when that color is dominant, and the opposite color will be worked in garter stitch, knitting all rows when that color is dominant. Charts are read from right to left on RS rows and left to right on WS rows. All sts are slipped purlwise with yarn either in back on RS rows or in front on WS rows.

Side Edging:

Using color D, and with right side of fabric facing up, pick up and knit evenly along one long side edge, approx. 3 sts for every 4 rows of the wrap. Knit 7 rows, and bind off. Rep on other long side edge. Secure and weave in all ends.

Tassels:

With color D, cut two-hundred forty 10”/25.5cm lengths, twenty-four 12”/30.5” lengths, and twenty-four 18”/46cm lengths of yarn. Divide the 10”/25.5cm lengths into 24 groups of 10. Tie each bundle at the middle point with one of the 12”/30.5” lengths. Fold each bundle in half so that the tie is at the tip of the loop created with the fold. Tie crosswise around each folded bundle about 1⁄2”/1.25cm below top of fold with remaining 18”/ 46cm lengths. Wrap the tails of the ties around and around the bundles and then thread them inside and down the middle of the bundles with a tapestry needle. Tie the tops of the tassels evenly along the shorter edges of the wrap, 12 per side, and knot to secure. Thread the tails inside and down the middle of the tassels using a tapestry needle. Trim tassels to desired length.
