If you think the idea of living along a beach sounds heavenly, then try living with Bondi Beach on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. True to its name, The Cliff Top House by Hare + Klein, is quite literally built on a cliff, situated in that pocket of prime real estate along the Sydney shoreline. With nature as its background and views second to none, it’s inevitable the interior mimics the serene and organic location.

Interior designers Hare + Klein were called upon to help create a home that was true to its surrounds. It was important for the client that their home be a reflection of its environment, without feeling like they were coming home to a beach house every evening.  As the client explains; “We live by the beach, but this is our home, not a holiday house. It had to be true to its environment”.  Project designer Eloise Fotheringham at Hare + Klein couldn’t have interpreted their brief any better. Raw and simple materials are used to create a light and textured ambience, and hues of washed grey, white and charcoal create an uncluttered and calm interior, reflecting the colours found on the shores of the nearby sea.

Journeying through the home, it’s clear that simplicity is paramount in every room. Nothing is overdone or busy. The spaces are seamlessly integrated through the familiar use of warm timbers and raw elements; the kitchen and bathrooms are pared back with the features being expressed in oversized elements, such as the freestanding bath and floor to ceiling joinery in the kitchen. This deceptively simple approach has ensured the design stays true to the clients brief and the home’s relationship with the sea is respected.

Not only effective in design, sustainability was also considered to ensure durability and longevity was maintained. Energy and water saving appliances were featured throughout and materials that were hardwearing were a must. A restrained lighting approach was taken to encapsulate natural light rather than artificial, highlighting the architectural and art pieces of the home. Together with the use of organic materials and the untroubled nature of the surrounding beaches, the Cliff Top House is not only a beautiful home to live in but one that will withstand the test of time.

“The interpretation of the split-level floor plan enables separate yet connected zones, defined by function”
