Chamonix Faux Fur Collar pattern by Two of Wands

There is nothing like December to make me want to wear all the (faux) fur, velvet, and animal print. It all just feels so luxe and festive! I guess that explains why my three latest designs for Lion Brand Yarn – the Chamonix Faux Fur Collar and the upcoming Empire Crop in their new Vel-Luxe yarn as well as my leopard print duplicate stitch tutorial for the Anouk Beret coming out next week – contain all of these elements! Lion Brand has really knocked it out of the park with their Go For Faux yarn, and I can’t wait to design other pieces with it. In the meantime, I present to you the Chamonix Faux Fur Collar – an insanely soft and glam collar that’s fully lined to give it even more structure and warmth.

I wanted this collar to feel a little oversized and statement-making without it feeling too overwhelming to wear all the time. I am obsessed with pairing it with a leather jacket, but I think it would look great over a long wool coat or even a quilted puffy coat. In fact, the original plan was to design a whole knit jacket to go with this collar in the Color Made Easy yarn I used for the lining, but due to other deadlines I had to put that on the back burner for another time.

Speaking of Color Made Easy though, one of my favorite parts of this collar is the lining that you can really customize to match your current winter coat because there are so many colors available. I’m so excited to see what other combos you guys put together! I was lucky enough to stop by the Lion Brand offices when I filmed my recent Tea With Shira episode, so I was able to see all of the gorgeous Go For Faux colors in person and choose the one that spoke to me the most. While I really do love all of the neutrals, there was something about this Grey Wolf color that really stood out. As soon as I started swatching with it and I kept putting it up to my cheek to feel its softness, I knew I wanted to make an accessory that would be close to my face.

A full fur hat seemed a little extreme, so I decided on something for the neck. But then a cowl or a scarf seemed too droopy, so structured/lined collar it was! I am so happy with this decision and really thrilled with the way this turned out. As I was working up the body of the scarf, the yarn started to look like a forest with snow capping the tops of the trees so I had the imagery and feeling of a cozy ski village in my mind. The luxe look of the collar and ski vibes reminded me of the French Alps and thus the Chamonix Faux Fur Collar was born.

I wanted the collar to lay flat against the shoulders and across the back, so I added some subtle shaping at the neck to help it curve around. This is an easy level knitting pattern and the techniques involved are the knit stitch, purl stitch, k2tog and ssk decreases, m1r/m1l and kfb increases, and seaming.
