Madrid-based design practice transform an old concrete home into a resort-like summer house for a young family in southern Spain’s Costa del Sol.
This Andalusian retreat by Febrero Studio is set against the rugged backdrop of the Sierra Blanca mountain range in Marbella, known for its balmy weather, coastline and luxury accommodation. The project explores the reincarnation of a traditional Spanish villa, repurposed with a new extension and fluid connection to the outdoors. By simplifying form and materiality and heralding the picturesque mountain views, Febrero Studio have created a sanctuary that evokes the feeling of being on holiday, 365 days a year.
The left side of the home is dedicated to cooking, eating and relaxing, while the right side of the home is reserved for the bedrooms and bathrooms.
In line with the historic Pueblos Blancos (White Towns) found in the provinces of southern Spain, Febrero Studio have retained the all-white appearance of the original home, also cladding the new addition in whitewashed lime mortar. Not only is this white mortar a symbol of Andalusia’s architectural history, but the chalky colouring serves as a pristine backdrop for the surrounding palms and sprawling Fuschia Bougainvillea.
Febrero Studio co-founder Jesus Diaz Osuna says the main design objective was to connect the home to the outdoors at every opportunity. To achieve this, limestone flooring forms the base of the home both indoors and out, paired with warm-toned timber and black steel-frame accents. “We used materials that are natural and honest, to cultivate a sense of warmth wherever you are in the home,” Jesus says.
A cohesive material palette in the timber window frames, kitchen joinery, external plantation shutters, and pergola creates a sense of unison between indoor and outdoor living spaces, paired with upholstered furniture and woven rugs inside.

Neutral limestone floors blur the boundaries between inside and outside.

The existing brickwork structure informed the redesign of the villa, articulated around a semipublic corridor that distinguishes the main living spaces overlooking the pool from the bedrooms and bathrooms. This simple yet functional floorplan , with an entire wing of the home dedicated to cooking and sharing meals poolside.
Casa JMA by Febrero Studio is a tranquil Mediterranean oasis, designed as an ode to the slow pace of life on the south coast of Spain.
