Caravan Poncho Pattern by Two of Wands

Poncho weather is my favorite weather. There is nothing better than that perfect temperature where there’s just enough chill in the air to need a layer of knits but not too much that you need a coat. I had that feeling in mind when I created the Cross Country Poncho, and after so many requests for a knitted version I took the plunge and designed a knit sister pattern for my latest collaboration with Lion Brand Yarn – the Caravan Poncho.

I was visiting home in Ohio while working up this beauty and the slight change in temperature from summer to fall had me all sorts of inspired. Just like the Cross Country Poncho, the Caravan Poncho is the perfect companion for adventures and exploring. Made with Lion Brand Wool-Ease, it is lightweight and squishy and soft and bouncy and amazing. I hope you enjoy the free pattern below, and as always you can purchase a printable, ad-free version here or grab the yarn kit from Lion Brand here.

I often get requests for knit versions of my crochet patterns and vice versa, but because the crafts are so different and have specific qualities that often influence the design, it’s not always possible to convert something from one to the other. In other cases like this, however, I love the challenge of translating a design across the two techniques.

Caravan Poncho Pattern by Two of Wands

My favorite kinds of designs are those with simple shapes and construction but little details that keep them interesting and unique. The addition of an eyelet pattern using chain spaces for the Cross Country Poncho gave an otherwise basic garment more personality. To mimic the look of the eyelets on the Caravan Poncho I created a lace pattern using yarn overs and decreases.

I’m a math geek so I had a lot of fun creating the charts for this pattern and figuring out structure of the lace portion. Unlike using chain spaces in crochet, for every yarn over in the knit lace portion there has to be a decrease next to it in order to maintain an even stitch count. It felt like putting a puzzle together and I’m excited to add details like this to more pieces in the future.

Because of the intricate lace detail I’d consider this an intermediate pattern, but an ambitious advanced beginner may be able to tackle it. The techniques involved are the knit stitch, purl stitch, yarning over, k2tog, ssk, the centered double decrease s2kp, reading a lace chart, and picking up stitches. The pattern also includes fully written instructions for the lace portions for those who don’t want to use the charts, although I find it much easier to follow them rather than the text.

Caravan Poncho Pattern by Two of Wands

Neckband:

With shorter needles, starting at the back left neckline corner and with the right side of the fabric facing up, pick up and knit 40 sts down to the center front st that was placed on a holder. Pick up and knit that stitch and pm on it, then pick up and knit 40 sts up to the back right neckline corner, then pick up and knit 21 sts across the back neckline for a total of 102 sts. Join in the round and pm for beginning of round.

Round 1: K 1, *P 1, K 1, rep from * to 1 st before center marked stitch, remove marker, S2KP, replace marker on last st, *K 1, P 1, rep from * end of round. (100 sts)

Fold each bundle in half so that the tie is at the tip of the loop created with the fold. Tie crosswise around each folded bundle about 1”/2.5cm below top of fold with remaining 18”/ 46cm lengths. Wrap the tails of the ties around and around the bundles and then thread them inside and down the middle of the bundles with a tapestry needle. Tie the tops of the tassels onto the 4 corners of the poncho and knot to secure. Thread the tails inside and down the middle of the tassels using a tapestry needle. Trim tassels to desired length.
