Known for her blog Eyeswoon and her two books, find them here in my booklist.
Imperfectly perfect
It was through searching for new items for her home that she discovered Beni, and their collective deep appreciation for “the charm of the hand,” the treasured time-honoured tradition that goes into the weaving of Beni’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect creations.
The collection titled Broken Symmetry consists of 12 geometric designs, presented in custom dyed sun-faded tones of sienna, sage, fawn, desert rose, and the perfect shade of bone. Colours, patterns and forms are inspired by different artists, architects and painters, all meaningful influences to Athena
Hand-woven by the team of female weavers
Being able to see the hand of the maker is increasingly rare in today’s world, yet it’s something that both Beni Co-Founders Robert Wright and Tiberio Lobo-Navia, and Calderone cherish. Athena’s first trip to Morocco in 2005 left an indelible mark on her design point of view, saying, “it allowed me to see juxtaposition, symmetry, and imperfection through a new lens.”
As with all Beni Rugs, this collection is hand-woven by the team of female weavers at the Beni Studio in Morocco, which Wright and Lobo-Navia opened the doors to earlier this year. Available in standard sizes, runners, and custom requests, the rugs are available for order on benirugs.com, via the Beni Apartment in NYC, and the Morocco Studio space.
