When it comes to sophisticated modern homes, have yet again created a interior that ticks all the boxes. Located on the shores of one of Sydney’s most iconic beaches, this Bondi apartment has had a complete new lease on life. What was once a humble beachside flat has been totally reconfigured and modernised for contemporary living.

It’s immediately clear upon entry that is is not an ordinary apartment upgrade – or for that manner, even what we’ve come to expect as signature Bondi beach style. Instead it’s equal parts monochrome minimalism and a gallery-like home for art and artefacts alike. Ridded of its original faux french fixtures and classic archways, clean lines, open spaces and a refined material palette is this contemporary dwelling’s new makeup. White and bright interiors contrast dark timber accents in the cabinetry, furniture pieces and doorframes. A mixture of black and white natural stone has been used in both the kitchen and bathroom, lining the kitchen splashback and effortlessly covering the bathroom walls floor to ceiling. Continuity between the spaces was a must for the designers, imbuing each room with a calm and understated atmosphere.
Other than the two bedrooms, every space in the home was completely transformed thanks to a complete gutting and replanning of the space. The redistribution of the spaces and its new open-plan layout eludes the misconception that apartment living is scarce of space – in fact, the apartment is anything but. Lawless and Meyerson cleverly reconfigured the kitchen and living rooms to act as one space, creating a visually larger area. While originally natural light was scarce, this overhaul connected the front and rear terraces to allow shafts of sun to protrude in from the window in the living room, offering an airy and fresh feel.
But surely the standout feature in our opinion is the gallery-like setting. While almost everything else has been revamped, the client’s extensive collection of artwork remained, the eye-catching pieces adding a sense of quirkiness and life to a somewhat refined ambience. White walls act as a clean, crisp backdrop to showcase these art collectors beloved photographic art. The differentiating sizes and portions of the artwork have been placed with effortless precision, beckoning your attention at almost every angle of the home and ensuring that eclectic and quirky vibe is accentuated. Being an architect and interior designer duo meant for the perfect ingredients for a successful apartment renovation and the Bondi Apartment was just that. Taking a step back and allowing the artwork to be the primary focus more than meets the client brief – it creates a standout space instead of what could have been another conventionally coastal abode. Softening the sturdy structure with minimal furniture and unique art, Lawless and Meyerson have created a haven for the clients to live, play and work in.
