Celebrated interior design studio Golden have worked their magic yet again. Founding Directors Kylie Dorotic and Alicia McKimm (and the talented team behind them) have perfectly captured the musical aspirations of a six-piece family in their stylish transformation of the aptly-titled ‘Blue Notes House’ in Melbourne’s Northcote neighbourhood. In redefining this stately Edwardian home to suit a modern family mad on music, the Golden team have delivered a house akin to a well-tuned instrument.

The key design components at play are minimalist lines, bold shapes and grand scales that bring about a present-day edge to the original architecture. Along with some sculptural changes, a symphony of varying blues was introduced to revitalise each space. Spanning from midnight blue to ultramarine, there’s a fresh sense of calm that the new blue hues present. Paired alongside a grounding base of grey, white and timber tones, the almost imperial accents help to create a cohesiveness and connect the heritage ceiling details and architraves- as well as offer some serious personality punch.

Additions to the musically minded inhabitants of the house have been thoughtfully woven throughout the home with detailing that includes custom joinery in the designated music room. This has been designed (and disguised) to accommodate everyone’s instruments, as well as a new sound system and speakers.

Over in the television-free living room, his-and-hers’ reading chairs and a generously sized Molteni sofa make the perfect inspirational space for putting a needle on the record player. Even more inspiring is the muted, abstract artwork by local Melbourne artist Caroline Walls that perches above the fireplace.

The family dining area doubles as a study. With plenty of room and chairs for everyone at the table, there are black Beetle Dining Chairs by Gubi as well as Arne Jacobsen Series7 Chairs by Fritz Hansen along the desk area. An iconic Snoopy table lamp by Flos adds a final touch of playfulness and ties it all together.

Based on the idea of serenity and spaciousness the master bedroom becomes a scene of moody-blues with a bespoke window seat offering a quiet place for contemplation. An intricately, custom designed Anna Charlesworth pendant hangs from the original ceiling rose and an upholstered, soft grey bedhead generously runs the expanse of the room. The space is stately in style, yet hints at its contemporary influences.

The Blue Notes House exemplifies how contemporary design can pay tribute to the spirit of a character home.

Throughout the home special attention has also been devoted to the use of lighting. A refresh in each room has brought about a more considered, minimal approach that compliments the period detailing but more importantly brings the house into a more contemporary light (no pun intended). A special mention must be made to the proportionally beautiful, custom designed pendant by LAAL that decorates the central staircase.

Not just a contemporary family household that plays to the tune of a charming Edwardian home, this is a design-lover’s dream house and a real mecca for the musicians who live here.
