It is not easy to find this secluded restaurant in the culturally active Sheung Wan, Hong Kong. Wandering on the artsy Hollywood Road, you might come across the fascinating place without notice.

A sign that means you finally find it is to see a foreign waiter in black suit, standing at a tram door, warmly inviting visitors to come in. Yes, he is the Mr. Rabbit leading Alice down to the rabbit hole. Once you enter Bibo via a discreet sliding door and descending a flight of stairs, a bohemian world is unveiled.

Designed by Substance, Bibo is a passion project that gives a nod to bohemian lifestyle. It redefines understated luxury: street art meets fine dining. The street graffiti art can enjoy overwhelming superiority here, despite in one of the most expensive cities.


The masterpieces of some of the world’s renowned artists are displayed on the wall, in the corner and in the washroom, including installations by Vhils, Invader, Jonone, Stohead, Kaws, JR, Mr Brainwash, Ella & Pitr, Mist, Madc to Hangings and works by Banksy, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Damien Hirst, Daniel Arsham, Jeff Koons, King of Kowloon, Shepard Fairey, Takashi Murakami, Yayoi Kusama, to name but a few. The dazzling collection echoes the arched ceiling corners and brass pipes, rendering commitment to French art deco.

Heading the culinary team is executive chef Mutaro Balde, whose three Michelin Star background includes Alain Ducasse at the Plaza Athenee Paris and L’atelier de Joel Robuchon, London. Chef Mutaro claims to be a follower of traditional French cuisine, while he explores ways to bring creativity to each dish.

Bibo is the name of the restaurant, and also the nickname of a French street artist and project coordinator behind the project. “Bibo” may be an artist or may refer to a group of  artists sharing the same spirit. Just as the restaurant manager Arturo Sims said to South China Morning Post, “Bibo is not about the food; it’s not even about the artwork. It’s all about you, our guest.”
