At est, we recognise a home is a place to be shared. Out of a client’s desire to entertain, AP Design House have brought their keen interest in art to give an old Queenslander a fresh start. Taking its name from an Australian wildflower, it seems this visually discerning home is now native to the landscape by design.

Led by ambitious founder Alexandra Ponting, Sydney’s AP Design House are artistic in their design process. The studio knows the finer nuances of layering and refining for a true harmony of elements. This creative zest is closely aligned with a passion for unifying the home with a client’s own narrative. In this case, the clients were eager to welcome guests into their home as part of their social lifestyle. The first step was to inject functionality into the early 1900s Queenslander by reworking the kitchen to an open-plan layout, then drawing on the soft timber panelling and white-washed brickwork to create a serene kitchen setting.  Accessing the balmy Queensland weather is made easy by the authentic addition of plantation shutters and bi-fold windows, while a down-to-earth culinary experience extends to both an indoor and outdoor dining area that readily embrace the planted surrounds.

AP Design House have mastered the art of overlapping materials in their careful selection of concrete, brickwork and timber. Offset by clean white walls, the materiality accentuates objects of personality and maintains the airy feeling characteristic to a coastal home. To bind each gallery-like space, AP Design House have centred the project around art. The house relies on a selection of Australian art, both sourced and curated by AP Design House. Each room takes shape around what hangs on the wall; drawing heavily on the rich Australian palette for the selection of furniture and flooring.

With the studio’s genuine interest in a visual experience, AP Design House have pulled-off a home tailored to its clients and well-equiped for any visitor. Both inspired by art and where art belongs, this Queensland home will remain relevant for years to come.

Our role was to completely re-design and build the kitchen and make the living and dining areas – both inside and out — feel energetic and connected.
