Modern serenity in Barcelona

Modern serenity in Barcelona

Situated within a 19th-century apartment building along Barcelona’s iconic Paseo San Juan, this project by YLAB Architects involved the revitalization of a modernist residence. The owners, an Australian couple in love with Barcelona, wanted to renovate the property to establish their European residence. The dilapidated flat was transformed into a comfortable space where they could host visits from family and friends.

Balancing contemporary comforts within a historically significant setting, the preservation of key features like the Nolla mosaic flooring and ceilings was paramount. The space was reconfigured into social and private areas flanking the entrance hall, each tailored to the owners’ needs. Drawing inspiration from the mosaic’s vibrant hues, Bauwerk lime paints and bespoke furniture complement the flooring. At the same time, a connecting element, made up of baseboards and interior and exterior carpentry in a very dark brown colour, runs through the space from one end to the other. This element penetrates and envelops the smaller interior rooms, which, combined with sophisticated artificial lighting and reflective materials, are transformed into powerful and luminous spaces. The outcome is a fusion of preservation and modern elegance, resulting in a home that is a serene and refined retreat.

A Cohesive Flow of Living Spaces

The design embraces openness—sliding doors retract, extending the airy feel from the sunlit corners to the heart of the home. An abstract painting adds a dash of color, elevating the otherwise neutral palette.

Transitioning into the dining space, an oval table surrounded by sleek chairs invites intimate gatherings. It’s a study in serenity, where the wooden floors lead eyes to the panoramic windows, framing the city’s pulse outside.

The kitchen reveals an understated elegance with its curved cabinetry accented in sage. Clean lines dominate the space, as limestone-type porcelain and clay-coated walls speak of thoughtful craftsmanship.

The Block Bond House: Blending Architecture With Nature

The Block Bond House, designed by Felipe Palacios and Johann Moeller in 2021 in Lumbisi, Ecuador, is a standout example of contemporary house architecture. Merging thoughtful spatial organization with the site’s natural elements, it presents a modern sanctuary for a young family. Its distinct use of exposed brick, steel, and wood underlines the house’s expressive materiality and warm character, while large folding doors blur the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces.

A modern wooden and brick structure with large sliding glass doors, exposed beams, and lush greenery.
Warm-toned wood paneled walls, exposed beams, and large windows offering views of a lush garden.
A cozy, rustic open-concept living space with wooden beams, brick walls, and a large dining table.

A modern brick building with a lush, verdant garden surrounding it.

About The Block Bond House

Transforming Space and Material into a Warm, Modern Home

The Block Bond House, emerging in Lumbisi, Ecuador, epitomizes the evolution of architecture from mere structural exercises to a holistic approach of spatial and construction poetry. Crafted by Felipe Palacios and Johann Moeller in 2021, this house serves as a harmonious response to the needs of a burgeoning family, seamlessly integrating the site’s distinctive features and showcasing the raw beauty of its materials. A story of elegant contemporary simplicity and warmth unfolds through its design.

A striking aspect of the project is its respectful dialogue with the pre-existing mature trees on the site. The strategic positioning of architectural volumes preserves the trees, underlining a deep connection to the natural environment. Notably, an avocado tree, accompanied by lemon trees, orchestrates the layout, creating a dromos that guides from public to a serene private space, culminating under the avocado tree’s natural canopy.

Blurring Boundaries Between Indoor and Outdoor

At its heart, the house reveals a sociable area bathed in light, where the rear garden’s lushness and a stream are visually captured. This space, defined by its openness and flexibility, is crowned with a hovering wooden roof that spans a generous living area. Here, interior and exterior realms merge through expansive folding doors, inviting the garden into the living space and vice versa, fostering a unique connection with nature.

The tactile character of the house is vividly expressed through the use of materials like exposed brick, steel, and wood. The facade’s modulation, articulated by a specially textured brick assembly known as the block bond, and a ventilated air chamber behind it, not only adds an aesthetic dimension but also enhances the home’s thermal comfort. The presence of steel, exposed in key architectural moments, contrasts with the brick’s solidity, adding a nuanced layer to the home’s volumetric expression.

An Invitation to the Sky: The Habitable Roof

Completing the architectural narrative is a habitable roof, accessible via a gracefully crafted spiral staircase. This ascent transforms from an architectural feature to an experiential journey, leading to an outdoor living space that offers panoramic vistas of the valley beyond. This rooftop terrace reinforces the home’s commitment to blending architectural innovation with the serene beauty of its surroundings.

In essence, The Block Bond House by Felipe Palacios and Johann Moeller is a modern masterpiece where architecture and nature coalesce, creating spaces that not only shelter but inspire and uplift, marking a significant stride towards thoughtful, sustainable living.

Talea Bryant Park Brings the Beer Garden Indoors

Whether it’s the light golden tone of a lager or the deeper amber look of a pale ale, most pints of beer pour in some variation of the colour brown. But sour beers introduce a whole spectrum of more inspiring hues into the mix — with mango brews taking on a tropical tint, passionfruit sours boasting a sunset-like glow, and strawberry blends even rivalling fruit punch in their ruby red vibrancy.

The exterior of Talea Bryant Park taproom, showing three wide grey columns framing large windows that look into a green space with curved wall niches.
A curved wall niche at Talea Bryant Park, framed in green and featuring a soft mauve partway up and a cream paint for the top half of the arch. Four wooden stools sit around a pink bar table.

New York City’s Talea brewing company understands this segment of the beer market especially well. Since launching in 2019, the beermaker (which is NYC’s first exclusively female-owned production brewery) has become well-regarded for its supersaturated sours. (Recent releases include Watermelon Splash and Tart Deco Banana Split.) In keeping with that same spirit, the beermaker’s fourth taproom, near Manhattan’s Bryant Park, is splashed in a bright, energetic palette that departs from the dark, industrial feel of many brewery taprooms. Credit for the airy, charismatic interior goes to NYC architecture and interior design firm ALA Studio, working with Aerial Design & Build. (Both had also previously partnered with Talea for one of its earlier locations in the West Village.)

The front bar area at Talea Bryant Park, featuring bar stools seated around a curved bar. The bottom is clad in mauve pink tiles. A curved wall niche frames the taps.

Inspired by this new outpost’s proximity to Midtown’s main green space, ALA Studio devised Talea Bryant Park as a kind of indoor beer garden — albeit, a beer garden that reflects the brand’s cheerful identity. “Because of the brand’s personality and the neighborhood context, we knew TALEA’s version of a beer garden had to feel more like a beautiful courtyard where you could sip a refreshing drink, rather than the typical backyard with kegs, corn hole, and big pretzels (although TALEA does have those and they’re delicious…),” says ALA Studio’s Marissa Feddema in the project’s press release.

The main drinking area at Talea Bryant Park, with the bar to the left and bar table seating to the right. Large curved niches divide both walls into three arches, while metal arches also span the ceiling. Orb chandeliers light the room.

The end result feels appropriately stately, yet far from stiff. Powder-coated steel sweeps from one side of the space to the other in curved bands, nodding to the idea of an arcade while still maintaining the space’s incredible height. Arched niches (each padded with acoustic PET felt) add to the grand-but-relaxed ambiance, framing the taps behind the bar at the front and breaking up the large seating area into a series of intimate zones each anchored by its own high-top table. In another homage to local architecture, the Artecraft light fixtures  a a tribute to the chandeliers hanging in the NYC Public Library across the street.

A seating area area at Talea Bryant Park, featuring bar stools seated around a pink table framed by a large wall niche. The bottom of the niche is painted pink, the top is painted cream, and the surrounding area is painted green.

As for colour, the taproom stays true to its outdoorsy inspiration by adopting a rich forest green as its dominant hue. From there, a lively mix of complementary hues help to divide the main area into a series of different horizontal planes. The lower portion of the space — including the curved bar area, clad in Mosa tiles, as well as the four-seater tables that extend out from the opposite wall — is splashed in a soft mauve, which gives way to a creamy tone partway up. (Bold black lines accentuate the transition from one colour to another, while also drawing attention to helpful coat hooks.)

The private dining area at the back of Talea Bryant Park, featuring wooden banquette seating and orangey-red lime wash paint on the walls. Planters hang from the ceiling.

The private dining area in the back, meanwhile, features a reddish-orange limewash paint up top and oak veneer wood banquettes down below. As throughout the rest of the space, hanging planters add to the taproom’s verdant appeal.

The main drinking area at Talea Bryant Park looking out toward the front window, with the bar to the right and bar table seating to the left. Large curved niches divide both walls into three arches, while metal arches also span the ceiling. Orb chandeliers light the room.

And yes, you can still order a standard IPA or pilsner at Talea Bryant Park. And while these brews might not be as colourful as their sour counterparts, they’ll still arrive in a pint glass decked in a bold, graphic design. In an environment like this, even standard brown beers glow a little bit brighter.

About Smart Casual

Embracing Nature in Every Corner

At the heart of Cēsis, Latvia, the Smart Casual project by Labs Dizains redefines living spaces. Designed in 2023, this private house holds nature, innovation, and harmony as its pillars. Spread over three levels, it adapts to the Gauja valley’s landscape, ensuring every room has a distinct connection with the outdoors. The central fireplace ties the kitchen, living room, and an inviting terrace together, promoting a communal living experience while maintaining privacy in the two bedrooms, each with its en-suite bathroom.

Seamless Interior Design Meets Functional Layout

Labs Dizains goes beyond traditional interior design, creating a space where architecture and nature coalesce. Large sash windows without curtains allow uninterrupted views and sunlight, blurring the lines between inside and out. Transparency is a key theme, seen in the kitchen island’s openwork lattice design, seemingly levitating above the floor, embodying the house’s airy essence. Furniture reaches maximum height, preserving the ceiling’s clean lines and integrating naturally with the Baltic-sourced finishing materials.

Sustainable Materials and Subtle Elegance

The house features eco-friendly lime plaster from Italy on walls and ceilings, achieving a seamless effect without visible seams. This choice enhances the uniform horizon line, despite the non-standard geometric structure of the building, including varying floor levels and sloping ceilings. The kitchen island and customized storage solutions were designed early, anticipating the future needs of a family while perfectly serving the current occupant’s dynamic lifestyle.

The integration of natural tones across the interior—browns, greys, muted greens, and black accents—alongside the lack of curtains, complements the seasonal landscape. Advanced wireless lighting controls offer a personalized ambiance, highlighting the sophisticated yet functional furniture designed to “levitate,” enhancing the space’s fluidity.

A Living Breath of Sustainability and Privacy

Innovation extends to the building’s architecture, shaped by the land and preserving every tree and shrub during landscaping. The Smart Casual home exemplifies a passive house, featuring solar panels, a heat pump, and an efficient heat recovery ventilation system, mirroring the project’s commitment to sustainability. Outdoor blinds, cleverly concealed within the facade, ensure privacy, prioritizing minimalism and environmental integration. This project is a testament to Labs Dizains’ vision of creating a space where design meets nature, offering a timeless living experience.

About MP House

Revolutionizing Compact Living: The Creation of MP House

In the heart of Soi Chuan Chuen Park Ville, Thailand, MP House emerges as an innovative solution to modern urban living. The challenge was clear: transform an inherited land, previously hosting an old family house, into a compact yet expansive new home. I Like Design Studio, in 2019, accepted this challenge with a clear vision—to design a residence that embraces privacy, efficient use of space, and a seamless blend with nature.

The house’s layout is ingeniously split into two main parts. One serves as the owner’s sanctuary, equipped with essential living spaces and personal rooms including a master bedroom, a kid’s bedroom, a work space, and a unique music room. The other part stands ready to welcome guests, maintaining a high degree of separation to ensure privacy for all. This distinct separation fosters a sense of togetherness while honoring individual space.

An Oasis of Privacy and Light

At the core of MP House’s design philosophy lies the desire to shield its inhabitants from the external environment, physically and visually. However, this does not come at the cost of the house’s connection with nature. The designers have masterfully created an enclosed outdoor space, featuring a pond and strategic tree placement. This area, enriched by an open-roof design, allows natural elements like rain and sunlight to penetrate, creating a calming, natural court visible from every room.

The innovative use of windows and voids minimizes heat gain while upholding the principles of good ventilation and privacy. A floating steel staircase not only serves as a functional element but also as a visual connector to the lush garden and balcony above, enhancing the interaction between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Reclaiming the Night Sky: A Tranquil Escape

The second-floor garden and deck area epitomizes privacy and tranquility. Conceived as a secluded retreat adjacent to the master bedroom, it’s the perfect spot for nighttime relaxation and stargazing, away from the hustle and bustle of the city life. This space, surrounded by high walls and filled only with the essentials—greenery and seating—allows residents to unwind in the presence of nature and the vast night sky.

MP House represents a thoughtful reimagining of the modern family home. Through its compact yet flexible design, emphasis on privacy, and harmonious integration with natural elements, it sets a new standard for residential architecture in urban settings.

FM House: Blending Modern Living with Art Nouveau Charm

Discover the innovative transformation of FM House, a charming Milan, Italy apartment designed by NOE9 in 2023. This unique project marries Art Nouveau details with modern living, showcasing a custom interior that seamlessly connects every room. About FM House

A Unique Marriage of Art Nouveau and Modern Design

In Milan, Italy, a captivating design project emerges with the renovation of FM House. NOE9, the visionary behind this 2023 project, aimed to preserve the apartment’s original Art Nouveau character while introducing elements conducive to contemporary living. The essence of this renovation lies in the intricate balance between maintaining historical details and implementing a modern lifestyle approach.

One of the client’s main desires was to transform the entrance from a purely representative space into a functional area, harmonizing with the rest of the apartment’s design. This led to the creation of specialized spaces within the challenging geometry of the existing floor plan. Custom interiors now open up to both the Art Nouveau balcony and the newly vitalized heart of the home—the entrance foyer. This area acts as a bridge, connecting various rooms while subtly revealing glimpses of each through mirror paneling. The foyer has transcended into a multifunctional space, where the original terrazzo flooring is given a contemporary spin through minimalistic and rational geometries.

Innovative Use of Materials and Textures

An emphasis on natural materials and textures marks the interior design of FM House. In the bathroom, Soleto stone becomes the centerpiece for the custom-designed washbasin, elevating the essence of intimacy using tactile and visually appealing surfaces. Custom-made sofas are adorned with linen and bouclé wool, integrating comfort with luxury. The choice of brass, raw iron, and wood “cannettato” on the walls introduces three-dimensional finishes that resonate throughout the apartment, ensuring a cohesive aesthetic.

Lighting: The Final Touch in Crafting Ambience

A carefully conceived lighting plan provides the finishing touches to FM House. It serves a dual purpose: to enchant and to function. Scenic lighting ignites emotions, drawing attention to the thoughtful blend of the old and new, while more pragmatic solutions ensure the space remains usable and inviting at all times. This dual lighting approach not only highlights the exceptional design work by NOE9 but also enhances the living experience within the historical yet modern FM House.

Through a harmonious blend of past and present, FM House stands as a testament to innovative thinking and design prowess, redefining what it means to live amidst history in the heart of Milan.

10 Home Decor Trends to Bid Farewell in 2024

In the ever-evolving space of home decor, staying abreast of the latest trends is crucial for maintaining a stylish and contemporary living space. As we approach 2024, it’s time to bid farewell to certain outdated home trends that have overstayed their welcome. Within this article, we will walk you through the outdated home trends you need to let go of in 2024, ensuring your home remains at the pinnacle of modern design.

Embracing Change in Home Decor as We Move Towards 2024

As we continue throughout 2024, the winds of change are blowing through the world of home decor. What was once considered chic and trendy has now become passé, making it essential for homeowners to update their spaces. This journey of transformation is not just about keeping up with the times; it’s about redefining your living space to reflect the current aesthetics and functionality that modern life demands.

The Overuse of Minimalism

A minimalistic room with decor made of natural wood.

Minimalism has dominated the design scene for years, advocating for a “less is more” approach. However, as we move into 2024, the stark, overly simplified spaces often associated with minimalism are making way for more balanced, warm, and inviting environments. It’s time to introduce a touch of maximalism—think bold colors, rich textures, and personal artifacts that tell your story. This doesn’t mean cluttering your space but rather curating it with intention and personality.

All-White Kitchens

A modern all-white kitchen flanked by dining table.

The all-white kitchen, once the epitome of chic, is now considered too sterile and impersonal. In 2024, homeowners are encouraged to inject color and warmth into their kitchens. This can be achieved through colorful cabinets, vibrant backsplashes, or even warm wood tones. The goal is to create a welcoming and lively space where cooking and socializing become a joy.

Fast Furniture

The era of “fast furniture” is coming to an end. These inexpensive, low-quality pieces not only lack durability but also contribute to environmental waste. In 2024, the focus is on investing in high-quality, sustainable furniture that not only stands the test of time but also has a lesser impact on the planet. Look for pieces made from eco-friendly materials and crafted to last for generations.

Open Floor Plans

While open floor plans have been popular for their spacious feel, they often lack privacy and functionality for the modern family. In 2024, the trend is shifting towards more defined spaces that cater to specific needs—be it remote work, online schooling, or simply a quiet nook for reading. This doesn’t mean erecting walls everywhere but rather using furniture, screens, or plants to create distinct areas within a larger space.

Industrial Aesthetics

The raw, unfinished look of industrial design is being softened as we move into 2024. Exposed brick, metal fixtures, and concrete floors are being complemented with softer furnishings, warm lighting, and indoor plants. The aim is to retain the character of industrial design while making spaces more inviting and comfortable.

Single-Use Spaces

Gone are the days when rooms had a single purpose. In 2024, flexibility is key. With many people continuing to work from home, spaces that can easily transition from a home office during the day to a relaxation area in the evening are becoming essential. Furniture on wheels, foldable desks, and room dividers are just a few ways to achieve this versatility.

Heavy, Dark Fabrics

Heavy, dark fabrics can make a room feel dated and claustrophobic. As we look to 2024, the trend is leaning towards lighter, airier fabrics that allow spaces to breathe. Linen, cotton, and other natural textiles not only offer a fresh aesthetic but also promote better air quality and comfort.

Saying Farewell to Traditional Dining Rooms

The formal dining room is becoming obsolete as we embrace more versatile living spaces. Dining areas are now integrating with other parts of the home, becoming spaces for homework, crafts, or casual gatherings. This shift reflects our multifaceted lives and the need for homes that adapt to our varied activities.

Stepping Away From Matchy-Matchy Decor

The rigid matching of furniture sets is a thing of the past. In 2024, interiors are all about mixing and matching – combining different styles, periods, and textures to create a unique, eclectic look. This approach allows for more personalization and the freedom to incorporate pieces that truly speak to you.

Goodbye, Gray

The cool, neutral palette of grays that dominated interiors is fading into the background. In its place, warmer, earthier tones are stepping forward. Think terracottas, deep greens, and rich ochres that bring a cozy, comforting vibe. These colors reflect our yearning for connection with nature and the outdoors, even in our indoor spaces.

Superbe coiffures bohemes printemps 2024

coiffure mariage tresse couronne bijoux fleurs

About Monochrome Apartment

Revitalizing Modern Living in Moscow

In the bustling heart of Moscow, just a stone’s throw from the serenity of a nearby lake, stands the Monochrome Apartment, meticulously reimagined by Alisa Shabelnikova. This 120 square meter (1291 square feet) space, chosen by a visionary young couple, represents more than a home—it’s a testament to the transformative power of interior design.

A Seamless Transition

The journey begins in the entryway, a gateway to a realm of spaciousness and light. Shabelnikova’s design philosophy shines through as each room unfolds into the next, promoting an atmosphere of unity and flow. The living room, once fragmented, now basks in the glow of natural light from expansive windows, offering breathtaking views and making first impressions last.

Clever Solutions for Cohesive Aesthetics

Challenges such as awkwardly located vent and sewer boxes in the kitchen did not deter the design. Shabelnikova ingeniously concealed these elements behind panels, integrating them with the kitchen’s walnut veneer cabinetry. This not only solved a functional problem but also enhanced visual harmony, embodying the monochrome theme’s essence of blending and contrast.

A Private Refuge

The apartment’s private quarters tell a story of tranquility and meticulous planning. The master suite, complete with a bathroom and dressing room, offers a sanctuary of comfort and style. Built-in wardrobes mirror the wall colors, blurring the lines between utility and elegance. An additional room, poised to evolve with the family, adds to the home’s adaptability and foresight.

Unified by Color and Light

Throughout, a palette of warm whites and dark walnut strikes a balance, making spaces appear larger and more inviting. A notable exception, the guest bathroom, deviates with its dark chocolate hues, adding depth and character. Such thoughtful color schemes reinforce the apartment’s overarching theme: a modern, timeless abode that captivates and comforts in equal measure.

Reflecting on the process, Shabelnikova credits the synergy between her vision and her clients’ trust as the catalyst for this creation. The Monochrome Apartment stands not just as a place of residence but as a piece of Moscow, redefined and rejuvenated through design.
